That whole development was only remotely possible before the 2008 recession when banks were basically giving out money for free and didn't care if you paid them back. There were a lot of projects like that back then in a lot of cities and pretty much all of them ended with little more than some dirt being moved and a whole bunch of liens against the developers.
Downtown Greensboro bowling alley / lounge on hold..(permitting issues) but is still on the table. It will be located at the corner of Lewis St and South Elm Street near Boxcar Barcade.
I'm sure the spin is that this is just another iteration of Project 561. But in reality, Project 561 is a pipe dream that never got off the ground. The city gave up on it because the concept was ridiculous and it was (predictably) making zero headway.
I'm sure we'll see some grand rendering in a couple weeks. But it's HIGHLY unlikely that the ACTUAL project will be anywhere near as grand... or anywhere if it doesn't get built at all.
Great! I'm a resident in one of the apartment complexes downtown and I love it! As impatient as I am seeing Roy Carroll's plan, I'll be even more impatient to see it complete. His project along with the Westin will lead to a couple of tower cranes downtown.
I'm hoping he will show the renderings and do something different from the previous design.
