JCPENNEY

JCPenney is joining Macy's and Sears and will close about 140 underperforming stores. However Haywood Mall is one of their stronger full line stores and is not expected to close. And the Wesgate Mall store in Spartanburg also seems to perform well, although with a more limited assortment. But I could see the small store in Easley possibly closing, as it is old and in need of renovation. And sales may not be as strong to sustain ongoing operation, particularly with a nice new Kohl's and Belk nearby.

As for Macy's and Sears, the Haywood Mall stores seem to perform well, although the Sears in Spartanburg could be vulnerable.

Any updates on the former Rite Aid / Sav a lot at Woodruff and ascuffletown? It appears that the interior is being remodeled.

That was one of the nicer Eckerd/Rite Aid stores. Hopefully another good store of some sort will go there. But there is already a CVS and Walgreen's nearby. Possibly a dollar store?

Could become a Fred's with the Walgreens/Rite-Aid acquisition but I don't think deal is to be finalized yet. And I think that location had a lease or for sale sign out front, at least at one time?(been awhile since I drove by there) so maybe something else?

The liquor store next to Five Forks bilo will be moving into this space. Half the store will be liquor, the other half beer and wine. Kinda hope they keep the drive thru

Fred's is in the process of closing at least 40 underperforming stores nationwide. Closing stores and acquiring Rite Aid stores does not make sense.

Acquiring over 1,000 Rite Aid locations would jump Fred's up to one of the largest pharmacies in the US gaining territory and purchasing power with the additional stores. But such a large jump needs to be handled correctly or could easily spiral downward.

Fred's should tread carefully not to become the Haggen's of drugstores.
