In the Boston area, and maybe other parts of Massachusetts and New England, they use "jug handles" that seem to work pretty well.

The problem I see is that traffic never will stop on University to allow such a left. Let's say I'm traveling east on 72 and need to go north in Jeff. This requires essentially a u turn onto 72 west. It's way too backed up so the driver could never get into traffic. The same problem exists right now when turning onto Providence from 72 heading east when there isnt a green turn signal, only a yeild on green.

On edit, would there be a light or only a yeild at the u turn?

There are lights if traffic volume dictates it (and I would assume it would be a no-brainer given the volume on 72)...it is actually a good design, I just know it will confuse the heck out of folks here.

Not any more than the apparent confusion about what a red light means.

It probably confused folks everywhere when they were first implemented. Not saying it's a good method or not ... I'm confused. One thing though ... "folks here" are smarter than the average Alabamian and can probably figure them out.

Sounds like the old Kroger shopping center on Hughes in Madison will be torn down pretty soon. The few remaining shop owners have been told they need to move in the next few months. Hopefully that means a new development is already in the works, but it could just be clearing the land to make it easier to sell.
