I just signed on today, but I'm enjoying the reminiscing. I'm 59 and hail from Commack, but my dad worked in Wantagh. He was a tailor (Mr. Siid, the Little Old Tailor), who worked at a shop next to the Wantagh Theater. Anyone remember him?
Before that I lived in Levittown until 1967 where I was a Junior at Island Trees High School. I remember going to Jolly Roger's on the merry-go-round, and (very rarely!) to Wetson's hamburgers across the street! Fifteen cents for a burger if I recall...

I also remember going to the Farmer's Market in the late 50s when I was a kid. While the folks were shopping we kids would get dropped off at a tiny free movie theater that showed old Laurel and Hardy movies, Woody Woodpecker cartoons and such. I remember shocking my mother one day when she came in and saw her little 9 year old smoking a cigarette. Actually it was a phony some kid gave me, but a very convincing one. it had red foil at the tip and actually had smoke you could blow out of it. Ingenious! Anyone remember the cotton candy machine next to it?
I was also really into comic books (and since have made a living as a comic book writer and cartoonist). The Farmer's Market had a stall that would sell fairly recent comics with the cover logos torn off for half price. Back then stores could get refunds on any unsold comics just by shipping the logos back, and a little extra cash could be made under the table by selling these stripped comics at Farmers Markets and flea markets and such. Later, some vendors at the market sold older comics, including a very few from the 1940s, some of which I still have in my collection.
Good memories!

Yeah, I remember the name!

I had one of those, too. That's where we purchased all our necessities, whoopee cushions, fake dog poop and vomit. The one side was adult only but we got to check some things out if you didn't stay on that side for too long.

I was very sad to see the Nassau Farmers Market go, still am.

I grew up not too far from there and had some great times running around with my friends in there, trying to get security to chase us.

I also rememeber the fire that took it down for good after it closed. I never saw anything like it, such a huge smokestack coming off of it. We thought a plane had crashed at Grumman.

I have no idea why a message I posted was deleted because of "not about Long Island or vulgar". I would NEVER print anything vulgar and don't understand about the "not about Long Island" comment. Why else would I have printed anything if it weren't about Long Island. I think if a message is deleted there should be a full explanation given. This amounts to censorship.

I grew up in Long Island...

You’ve tried to use your father’s monthly ticket to ride the LIRR. It worked.
I would try if my dad had a monthly but my mom does instead. I think the conductor would notice.

Oh, your parents are from Brooklyn? So are mine!
No ansectors from Brooklyn or anywhere in NYC, well maybe at some point but long ago. Half of family has been in Long Island for at least 100 years. Shouldn't parents from Long Island make more sense as being from Long Island than Brooklyn?

Brooklyn/Kings County is the western end of Long Island.

I've seen in type and heard on the radio "in" Long Island a lot lately.

When I was still there it was often argued but the more common thing was "on" Long Island.

Has this changed?
