This is a good question.

LA has it's faults but is awesome compared to many other parts of the country/world.

I lived and worked in So Cal for years. I was single and back then it was a very fun, exciting place to be.

But your feelings change when circumstances change. When you get married eventually you want to own a house. Then kids come and with that the desire to live in a good school district, etc. LA makes that very difficult unless you bought a house back when things were affordable. When $750k+ gets you a tiny dump in a meh school district, something has to give. Access to the beach, good weather, or exciting entertainment is meaningless if you don't have the money or time to enjoy them. That seems to be what separates the people who love or hate LA.

Excellent weather, access to oceans/mountains/desert, excellent food variety, excellent entertainment options, laid back atmosphere compared to east coast, beautiful geography to name a few. I've lived in the Midwest, Desert Southwest, East Coast and here, and I'll take here anyday over the others. There's negatives, yes, but the positives outweigh the negatives.
