Stayed up late watching “The Big Country” William Wyler director
Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Charles Bickford, Burl Ives (Academy Best Supporting), Charlton Heston in a supporting role and Chuck Connors—Carole Baker playing a petulant blond—she could do so much better
Apparently most of the actors hated Wyler—he and Peck were executive producers and personal friends before the movie
Didn’t speak for 3 yrs afterwards
Love the musical score—
Plot predictable and acting not really exceptional—
Gregory Peck doing an early version of Atticus Finch But the music ties it all together so well you just follow along
By now, I've seen a dozen or more of Rutger Hauer flicks, granted 2000 and before, and I have yet to feel like I am watching a Rutger Hauer flick. He has yet come across as himself and not the character....even though it seems like it should come across as that. Perhaps it is that in watching his flicks, he doesn't overwhelm the movie.
ANYHOW, it's a good action flick. Lots of bullets flying, guns blazing, femme fatales to die for (but for Rutger, 2nd leading villain, & extras, the boys are a bit weak), a hard movie to put down. I did have to take about 3 breaks but it was hard to find a breaking point.
I picked up this movie YEARS ago because it has Ironside and Charbonneauc in it. Those two have great acting chemistry together. Unfortunately, not in this flick for it seems the opening scenes are the only ones they have together. There are no loose ends in this flick but it is not very satisfying how they get there. Barely a 6.0.
Sam Peckinpaw’s “Killer Elite” w/James Caan doing a great job, Robert Duvall, Bert Young, Bo Hopkins, Mako, Arthur Hill, and an ill-looking Gig Young...
Set in San Francisco and location taken advantage of in many ways
I thought I had seen it before but I usually remember movies good or bad—don’t think I had seen this so was doubly appreciated
4 out of 5.
A little too obvious philosophizing
I have parts 2 and 3 also but I dont think they are as good.........
