Huh, that's how the TZ works? Have not crossed the new one yet.
Yup!
A couple of years ago, NY State removed the tollbooths on the Thruway and some of their toll bridges, and replaced them with gantries suspended over the old toll plaza. If you have E-Z Pass, they record that data. If you don't have EZ Pass, they take a pic of your license plate, and you receive a bill in the mail a few weeks later.
I'd rather not receive bills from multiple authorities. Also the account makes enforcement easier.
No bills... an account that is attached to your license plate.
The system already reads licenses plates whether you have the tag or not. They definitely have the ability to create accounts attached to your license plate as opposed to a transponder signal.
In other words, exactly the same as ezpass, but your "transponder" is your plate. My plate passes a camera, bam, they charge my account.
There's no way that's out of the realm of current technology.

Would the account be the same for New York, New Jersey and the Port Authority?
Trust me, The Powers That Be are universally better-informed than the usual crop of "NJ is the worst" whiners who flock to this forum. What I posted was surely new information for that crowd, but I can guarantee that the folks who run the NJTPK Authority are well aware of our ranking vis-Ã -vis tolls.
I had a patient who worked construction for state of NJ. He had a lot of things to say regarding inefficiencies and wasteful usage of money.
I think he either qualifies as a "power that be" or had some insight on those folks.
