You obviously have no idea what true paupers eat. It's mostly processed foods that are cheap like Kraft Mac & Cheese and pasta with Ragu.

Our budget exactly. We are a small family.
We shop at Whole Foods almost entirely, for quality and to support more responsible practices where we can.

People eat far too much meat - truly unhealthy, not good for the environment, and economically detrimental.

How is having to pinch pennies like that smart? Isn't the reason why people have jobs is because they want t o be able to AFFORD to buy what they WANT and NEED?

Really, if someone's smart, they'll do what they need to do get the things they want.

growing up in the 60's and 70's if a meal didnt have meat it was like WHAT THE HECK.

while i still do love beef if we have it once every 2 weeks thats a lot.

we tend to use alot of turkey, chicken and fish. the crock pot tends to get quite a bit of lean pork creations.

Im on lipitor now and am on a low salt low fat diet for the most part but ill stray every so ofton.

like i said i watch the food channel now like its porn.

that was my point. i want what i want and don't mind spending for it. ill make the savings up on the investing end . i don't want to be limited doing anything because it may not be the best value at the moment.

life is way to short to not do things you may want because it is a few extra bucks. life is a trade off and all about choices.

as my father said live each day like it is your last but save like you will live to 105.

I don't HAVE to pinch pennies, I just like to be smart with my money and not spend money needlessly.

If I was pinching pennies, I'd be eating cheap processed foods and a lot of crap. We don't eat things we don't like, not at all. We enjoy the foods we eat, we're just not spendthrifts about it. Why buy a pork loin for full price on Tuesday when chicken is on sale and you know the pork will be on sale three days later in the week? It defies all logic.

For a moment, let's step away from food.

My rent is $1000 a month for a place in the Bronx. Now, its possible I could live even more cheaply in NYC. I could move into a house with immigrants in Corona, NY, and share a basement with some guys and pay only $300 a month.

I could do it and it would save some money, but its not particularly comfortable or viable long term.

Your budget has some adult having something like oatmeal and raisins for breakfast. That's not enough to fill me. One of your lunches was basically salad, with chickpeas. Again, not enough.

It may not be Kraft foods, but it doesn't sound like a full meal. Still not good, and still not eating well, if you really do eat like that.

i would not classify some lettuce leaves and chick peas as a meal even if you get a slice of bread.

What's not good about it? It's plenty of food for us--no one goes hungry in my house. We also don't stuff ourselves silly. I eat salad for lunch because I LIKE it. Same reason my husband eats PB&J. I offer to make him something, buy lunch meat, nope, he wants PB&J. Jiff crunchy and Smuckers strawberry on whole wheat.

We are not going hungry, not eating foods we don't like. So what's your problem?
