Sad that so far there's nothing to prevent the next one.
Building safety walls would go a long way in preventing the next one. This country isn't very good at being proactive when it comes to much of anything, except for seeing to it the rich remain rich.

That's not proactive, that's a reaction to the 1929 crash :-)
I have always assumed the OTHER contact point would be between the wheels and the tracks. But then I see the logic of needing two contact shoes so the train could go either way.
I'm gonna look harder.
No, I wasn't concerned about electrocution but rather viewed proper understanding of the third rail as a means of AVOIDING being turned to hamburger by the speeding train. I am envisioning my being on the tracks and either stepping on the third rail to get onto an adjoining track (without a train) or going under the platform.
Climbing out does not seem practical...expecially with flashbulbs going off in my face.
Yikes ! How tragic.
I know about the 125th Street station death yesterday because I was around, if not right there on the platform - I have not heard anything specific, though.
We should also be teaching people that if they get pushed or fall onto the tracks, there are two things to do:
1) Duck underneath the platform, which has a groove in case of emergency.
2) Run away from the train (as in the direction a train would go in) to the end of the platform. Beyond it is a ladder, and if necessary, a blue light indicating the location of a switch to turn off the third rail power supply, if I'm not mistaken. This could also be used by bystanders.
Of course, this requires consciousness and some rationality, which is limited in these situations.
