You start work at 9 and go home at 4:40. Lunch is at 1pm. A couple of people come in at 8 and leave at 4 but that alternate schedule has to be approved by OCA and depends on the courts needs.

@Baretta625,

sounds like a great schedule.

BTW, Suffolk is canvassing again.
I just got a letter in today's mail.

@Baretta,

Thank you.
I've put in for both NYC family court and Suffolk for these recent canvasses.

FYI for anyone doing the NYC Family Court canvass, the email address given on the canvass letter is incorrect. The fax number is correct.

The correct email address is nyfc_personnel@nycourts.gov

The email address given on the letter doesn't get kicked back but apparently is an unattended mailbox.

I called on Tuesday to confirm receipt because the response deadline is Wednesday, and was advised of the change in email address. I received a reply confirming receipt from the above referenced email address but never got a response from the email address referenced on the canvass letter.

I have a stupid question. When you get a canvass letter, what does it say. You don't have to say specifically, but just wondering. And does it come in the mail (yes I'm sure this has been asked probably by me). I know my number is down low so a letter soon isn't going to be easy. But I am hopeful. Also, is there anyway we can call to see where they are at? Thanks all.

@Mellyrose, those aren't stupid questions. Ask away.

Yes, canvass letters come in the mail.

They look official, from a state agency or clerk's office or courthouse. Just open anything that looks official. Make sure OCA has your current mailing address if you've moved.

They basically say, in bureaucratic language, that you're being considered for a position and asks whether you want to interview for the position. There are boxes to check off and blanks to fill in. You mail, fax or email your response, but only use the response method(s) requested by the agency, specified in the letter.

There is an HR number you can call to identify how far they are down the list, but I don't know it offhand - does anyone else have it?

Just a word about that "going home at 4:40"...

Court Assistants are contractually allowed to swipe out at 4:40pm but TECHNICALLY are supposed to remain at their assignment until 5pm. You will NEVER find anything in writing saying that an employee can LEAVE at 4:40.

Is this ever enforced? Hardly ever. But for any new Court Assistants who go into the job with an attitude that they HAVE to be ALLOWED to leave at 4:40, well they might be in for a surprise and its a sure way to catch the attention of "management".

New Court Assistants will most likely be assigned to the Help Center and if you're low man on the totem pole you may have to stay until the last litigant is taken care of.

@NYCourtGuy,

thanks for the advice.

If/when I get the job I'll try to avoid the mistakes you describe.

I contacted HR yesterday. They are up to rank 945 statewide, NYC rank 492.
