No, inflation was not such that it justified another 1.5 billions, if crime is on the rise, and gun crime not being prevented, there is mismanagement.

There should be a negative correlation with violent crime, it is not the case, so no, the cut is justified.

The cumulative rate of inflation over that period was just under 10%, so it doesn’t come anywhere close to accounting for the spending difference. That budget change is almost 25% !

So whose pockets did it go to?
The last decade or so NYPD salaries have gone up considerably and they are paid even more for overtime and ticket writing. Low paid and rookie cops are assigned to dangerous areas while the higher paid ones are assigned to easy midtown precients that do nothing but take bribes and write tix. It's not uncommon for a 6 year vet to pull in $150k with overtime and other bonuses paid out and never had to make any arrest in years.

Default NYC passes austere budget that cuts $1B from NYPD

This is unheard of...mind boggling. New York City lost 9 billion dollars in revenue because of the cornovirus pandemic. New York City wants to cut 1 billion dollars. That's a lot of money. NYC is huge! I live in the state of Georgia and Governer Kemps sign the 2021 fiscal year budget with 1 billion dollars to education and mental health.

Don't forget, our loser governer ok'd the no cash bail that started Jan. 1st. That was the begining of the end for this state. Criminal skells are walking the streets when they should be in jail. Throw in the release the poor convicts due to Covid in prison bull**** and you have even more criminals walking the streets. Now... Due to pandering to a false narrative, lets cut the legs out out from under the police. This city and state are doomed. This is what the electorate asked for, now they get it. As the law abiding and tax paying citizens flee this ****hole city, it'll soon look like Somolia. Congrats asswipes for destroying this once great city. Hope you enjoy it!

Totally dysfunctional to say the least.
150k+ overtime and bonus after 6 years, and they want to play victim and cry scandal? And some people are buying it !!! Pathetic !!!
Tssssss cops in countries like Germany don’t make half of that salary, they’re lured by doing a job with duties and responsibilities, and don’t have qualified immunity.
Officers who will retire and not want to be cops will be a clean up, we need cops who are irreproachable.
Also there should be physical standards as part of the reforms. They should be able to train at 60% of a professional athlete and be tested monthly (at least three 5-mile runs a week, mandatory jujitsu to be able to subdue someone non-lethally, and boxing or Muay Thai, including sparring with competing fighters, so they can feel what a real blow/fighting for your life feels like and be in the think twice before beating the crap out of a weaker person. The more experienced as a fighter the more you humble yourself, they need that, humility !!!
So that budget increase was a pay rise absolutely not indexed with inflation. $1-billion is the least we can do !

What a minute. This is NYC where a $150,000 salary is MIDDLE CLASS. It's not a high salary by any means.

Are police officers not expected to afford some decent place to live and feed their kids?

I don't see you putting your life on the line when you go to work either

WTF!

$150,000 + overtime and bonuses is more than decent for a job that requires.... that requires NOTHING.... literally everybody and anybody can be a cop, what’s the glory in it??... no one forced them to be officers, it’s a choice.

Average salary in France for an officer €31,200 ($35,154), and it’s a first world country and the capital is expensive as hell.

Some jobs with less than half the benefits in NYC and that require a Bachelors or a Masters, pay you $60,000 a year, you pay your own transportation, and if you mess up (like send the wrong email) you’re fired on the spot, no qualified immunity.
