[quote=Slammin' Scrannin';9696934]I doubt there is a correlation between media depictions of sex and how often kids engage in sex.

Moreover, the same parents who seem seriously concerned enough about the consequences of sex to want to ban all depictions of sex in the media-- these same parents are typically against sex education for their children that is proven to reduce teenage pregnancies and transmission of stds. Instead they support ridiculous things like "abstinence only" education, which is proven to increase those things. Not all of them are in the same boat, though, so it would be unfair to lump all parents there. Just a side note.

Good grief - no correlation between media's obsession with sex and kids engaging in it???? What planet are you living on? If kids watch enough shows/videos and listen to enough music full of sexual depictions, they begin to think there is something wrong with them for not being cool and doing all the stuff they see on TV. I have no problem discussing any aspect of sexuality with my kids, but I don't think they need to be bombarded with it everytime they turn on the TV. My kids spend plenty of time outdoors and doing other activities, but they have every right to be able to turn on the TV and watch a few shows without me having to worry about the smut that is tossed in during the commercial breaks.

There is nothing ridiculous about "things like abstinence". It's the only surefire way to prevent unwanted pregnancy, AIDS, and STD's. If some of the adults tried it, there wouldn't be millions of aborted babies and millions of dollars used to fight a disease that could be prevented.

Honestly, I'm sick and tired of fellow parents who whine and complain about their children learning about sex. You guys should just be honest with yourselves in that your opposition stems from your own embarrassment and awkwardness about the subject rather than on any effect this knowledge will have on your kids. Yet what's truly pernicious is to suggest that seeing a pair of boobs on television or hearing a bad word is more harmful than glamorizing tobacco use-- a truly deadly habit.

Some parents just have messed up priorities.

Hollywood is big business. Sex sells. It wouldn't be any different if Rupert Murdoch owned a movie studio.

Oh wait, he does, and it's not.

Well said! It's so true that it's really the embarrassment and shame about sex that creates perversion. If there was no embarrassment and shame about sex in our society, then it would not sell as many millions of records, movies, tv shows, and clothing lines! People are obsessed because they are repressed. Religion has a big part to play in the repression of sex, and its ultimate perversion through tv and other media. It is a tough pill to swallow, but there it is, the truth. Now be free.

So true!! I laugh (with sad humor) when I see Americans walking through the streets of Europe & averting their eyes/blushing/etc when they pass one of the MANY nude statues (or paintings) in the courtyards/piazzas/etc. Even the sight of a stone or oil depiction of a human body is an embarrassment instead of a work of beauty.....

Well, I'm neither embarrassed or shameful about sex, but I can tell you that I am tired of seeing it EVERYWHERE. The media have made sex the number one thing of importance in our society, and the more outlandish and abnormal the better, when it should be treated as an everyday part of life. I don't agree that religion represses sex, because most religions promote marriage and having a family, which cannot happen without sex.

Wow, do only those stupid, backwards Americans do this? Or do you suppose that there might be people from other nations that are just modest by nature?

Religions promote procreation. Not just plain old fun sex.

Well, the reason it is everywhere is because people want to see it. We are the media. And the reason people are obsessed with it is because they are ashamed of it.

One day I wondered what percentage of sites on the internet are porn related. So, I asked the central mind (Google) and found out that approximately 12% of all internet sites are porn. That's quite a bit when you really think about it. Why are people obsessed with porn? I think it is because sex is repressed.

And I think religion represses sex through the promotion of abstinence. Abstinence is just another way of saying "repress sex." Marriage doesn't make sense for everyone. Not everyone wants it. Many people want to share love and sexual intimacy with a number of individuals, and as long as they aren't hurting anyone, why not? Kids are curious because they have bodies that are capable of various states of pain and pleasure. They will experiment. And I'd venture to guess that it's what has been done since the beginning of human presence on earth. To ask a kid to abstain from that instinct is to ask the impossible, and to ask them to abstain only from the behavior is to ask them to repress themselves. And that repression creates obsession, which leads to perversion. Thanks, religion!
Yours truly,
A recovering catholic
