As a kid at Christmas wishing to get a new horse statue or a cuddly stuffed animal toy, we were brought up to be grateful and taught not to be asking for things.
I do remember the year I was wishing for the Easy bake oven (it was the first year it came out) I was so surprised and thankful when I received this gift. Many times I got a new party dress and dress shoes that was a big deal too, and always thankful.
I always got a lot of gifts... socks, day-of-the-week underwear, nightgown, robe and/or slippers, crayons, a hat, scarf or mittens mom knit for me. I remember when I finally, finally got the box of 64 crayons--all of those beautiful colors.
Mom was a terrific seamstress and made some wonderful clothes for my dolls. One year I got a miniature tea set with tea pot, sugar and creamer, cups and saucers. I had tea parties with the baby doll and a couple of stuffed animals. The dog was hoping we dropped a cookie.
I probably wanted some plastic thing more, but I fondly remember these gifts of love.
Was that when you had to use your own potato? I was telling someone about that and they didn't believe me.
Yes we had to use a potato. I just looked this up - Hasbro started selling it in 1952 and since
potatoes and other vegetables would rot (plus government regulations) in 1964 the kit came
with a plastic potato body.
*interesting fact - That Mr. Potato Head commercial was the first toy that was advertised on tv.
I remember Saturday morning movies were .05 cents. My mom would give me a quarter. I could get into the movie, buy popcorn, candy and a drink and still have a nickel left over for a cherry coke at the drug store soda counter as I walked home. By myself. 7 years old. Never had to worry about someone harming me. This was the late 1940's and early 1950's. La Grange, Texas. Sometimes she would give me .50 cents to stop at the store and buy a new pair of tennis shoes. I went to school barefooted until the 5th grade. I went barefooted everywhere. At the 5th grade the school said I had to start wearing shoes because of insurance reasons. They came off when I got home.
