What about vaccinations? Schools usually require them...

A well baby visit discovered my daughter's cataracts and resulted in her getting early treatment and a quick recovery.

I don't think they are necessary every year if you're going to the doctor for other reasons but I do think that an expert checking out your child once in a while can help prevent serious issues.

Exactly. A routine check up revealed an enlarged spleen caused by leukemia in a 17 year-old friend of mine.

DH took DD for her physical and shots. She did very well and doc suggested HPV shots but we will hold off for a year or two. She is only 11. but she did get a meningitis booster as well as 6th grade shot (not exactly sure what that one was for). I was surprised about the meningitis booster as I remember my grown kids got them only right before college. She took her shots like a trooper and her Dad was very proud.

Our dr suggested waiting on the HPV until right before college.

Growing up I always had annual physicals plus if I got sick. Also twice a year to the dentist. Even now as an adult my mom will ask me if I have had my checks.
Yeah -- my aunt had a routine annual physical one June, she was religous about having them, and happily announced the doctor gave her a clean bill of health. She died from cancer in October.

I also know a man who got a good check up, was told he was in good health and he died from a heart attack the following week.

In fact if I took a perfectly healthy child that had nice pink gums, no bruises, no headaches or weakness, to a doctor for a well child check up and was told the child had leukemia, I'd quickly be looking around for another doctor.

I really like our doctor, and she insists that every child come in every year. If it were possible to continue seeing her and only go when they were sick, then that's what I'd do (I hate that they tend to pick up germs in the doctor's waiting room!!), but to me it's worth it to just take them each year to be able to see the doctor that I want them to see. Also, my daughter requires an Epi-pen that needs to be renewed each year, so that makes it convenient. This year, we didn't have any sick visits (the kids have their yearly appointments this week), so it has been a full year since we've been in.
