My kids have had annual physicals- annually. Our school district actually requires them in certain grades as well, I believe it is; Kindergarten,3rd,6th & 11th.
We are given a form for the physician to fill out as well.
When I called to get an appointment for my rising 6th grader her necessary shot I realized this 11 year old child had not been seen by a physician for 3 years. Is that so terrible? Now if she had been sick, or course I would not hesitate to get her ASAP to doc. She had all her well baby checks and shots, what she needed for starting school, etc. But I figure if it ain't broke why fix it. She is growing fine, weighs what she needs to, all systems are working fine, skin clear, no bruises, no aches or pains.
I was told she had to have a physical and could not just get a shot. Well I guess I don't mind but it got me to thinking what do other parents do? Do you take a healthy kid to get a physical just cause somebody says (doctor lobby?) it has to be done every 12 months?
My first 2 kids are well grown and I never had physicals for them unless they were sick of needed it for sports team, etc. And they turned out great. When did this every 12 month stuff start?
It's still mostly a waste of time. 99% of people are fine until they are 40 years old.
Hmmmm...well just for argument's sake. My son had scarlet fever at 4. My daughter had cataracts at 8. Same daughter had pneumonia at 5. My appendix burst at 10. I broke both of my arms before I was 10.
However, a small percentage is still a giant number of people ..... if there are roughly 140M people under 40 that would still be roughly 1.4M people that wont be fine
I've been on the wrong end of odds that are way lower than 1% on multiple occasions and there are doctors offices in every city that specialize in treating those who were also on the wrong side of the odds and they are unfortunately always busy
Every year. Mine does do blood and urine. He is into wellness care though, and I'm glad he did because my daughter and I both lacked vit. D. Now that her vit. D is up to par she isn't such a lazy teenager anymore.
Not everyone goes yearly though, I wouldn't beat yourself up for it.

If that were true, pediatricians would be out of business and no one would pursue that course of study in medical school.
