The Kon-Tiki, and the area around it, changed from a respectable "motel row" to a not-so respectable area. I don't know about the individual management of that motel, but looking at it frm the exterior, it was allowed to slide downhill with the rest of the area. The land became worth way more than the building and the business.

Yeah, I understand that area along Van Buren became pretty bad since the time I stayed at the Kon Tiki. It was very nice then with all the little mom and pop places to stay and several restaurants. Such a shame. Only memories now.

Right around the corner from the Kon Tiki, was a tavern called The Twin Wheels, at one time a local watering hole, with the hospitals there and such, I knew the owner for awhile, in the 80' I believe. Last time I was by there it was empty lot also!

Default city center motel

Speaking of old motels, here's are gem that still stands today.
The Fabulous City Center Motel. Just east of 7 Ave & Van Buren.
Im fairly sure it is still in operation however I wouldn't recommend going down there at night unless you're armed.
What great 50's design. George Jetson would be proud.
Check out that powder blue 57 Nomad parked out front.

The area is where the APS building is today, and it could be that, but it seems to be on the wrong side of First National Bank.

This threw me at first also but then I realized this is looking southwest from the corner of 2nd Street and Taylor. The hotel took up the whole city block. You can see the Security Building on Van Buren and Central.
