Yes, I remember that commercial too! Good call!

Where exactly was Wagon Wheel Kiddie Land?..and what is there now? Wallace and Ladmo spent many weekends there, but I never went.

It was originally 4417 E. Thomas Road but moved over to Oak? street when the Thomas Mall was built. There were lots of businesses up and down Thomas that had Wagon Wheel in their name. I heard that Legend City moved some of the rides to their site.

My first job out of high school (Maryvale, 1973) was an usher at the Glenfair Cinema Five, a Harkins Theater located NW corner of 59th Ave and Bethany Home Rd, in a small strip mall. It was a twin screen theater, with a 'soft-core' X rated movie running on the north screen (like "Fritz the Cat"). South screen ran a regular movie, like "Soylent Green" and "Battle for the Planet of the Apes". Midway through the summer, some change in the obscenity law made the Harkins drop the "X" movies for hard "R"'s.

Default Growing up in Maryvale

I found this website 5 days ago, and I tried not to post until I had read the entire thread. Now that I finished, I have a few things to add that I don't believe to be repeats:

Dave Clark Five concert at VMC, 7-1-1966 (I was only 10, but my older sister attended)
Maryvale Shopping City (pre Maryvale Mall), complete with an El Rancho, Ryan Evans (Caring for you, is our business, at Ryan-Evans Drug Store), Malcoms, a bowling alley, Gordon's Jewelry store, Kresge's, and lots of other stores. I remember the large open field before it was built.
Maryvale Terrace, across 51st Ave from Maryvale Shopping City, had the TG&Y, a hobby shop, McMahon's Furniture, a drug store, Woody's Mexican Food, an auto parts store, and a bunch of other stores.
55th Ave didn't cross over the canal just north of Osborn.
A high pitched squeal in Fed-mart that my brother and I could hear, but my parents couldn't. (it was loudest near the jewelry counter.)
Getting my first guitar from Govway for Christmas, 1967. (still have it)
Guitar lessons from Joe Herman at Arizona Music Center.
A J Bayless at 59th Ave & Camelback, NE Corner
Val's Hobby Shop, just south of Camelback, west side of 59th Ave.
First through eighth grade at St Vincent de Paul School, 51st Ave & Osborn.
Double sessions at Maryvale High Sophomore and Junior year (Freshman year I went to Bourgade).

My parents moved to Phoenix in 1948. Lived near 35th Ave and McDowell. Older sister was born before my folks arrived. Older of my two brothers was born in 1952 at the old St Joe's Hospital. My other brother (1954), younger sister (1957) and I (1955) were born at the current St Joe's. We moved to Maryvale, near 55th Ave & Campbell, in late 57, just before I turned 2. Mom went back to teaching at Laveen Elementary in 1961. I remember that, when the Salt flooded, she had to drive from 51st ave to cross the river at Central Ave, then back to 51st Ave.

Speaking of hospitals and I don't know if it's been mentioned, but I can vaguely remember the County hospital in a location other than where it is now...my mother says it was at 22nd and Durango...any one have photos of this?
