I prefer mentoring because it give the child a chance to see first hand that there is life outside of what they know.
Getting them out of their environment is key so is showing them they can be something other than what they see. A lot of kids in that situation give up on their dreams. Once they stop dreaming, they have nothing to live for.

Michael Baisden has been trying to get a mentor program going for a while now. I don't know how successful it is.

Every school yard has bullies. We dealt with them by sticking together and not turning a blind eye. Kids today aren't facing bullies, they're facing armed thugs. Different ballgame. Once they cross that line losing reverence for life, they really are lost.

What's worse-- the fact this incident happened, or the fact that grown adults are forcing kids & teens to fend for themselves (offering no answers) because adults can't grow they hell up themselves?

A lot of gangs even before that were into smuggling liquor back during Prohibition. I often wonder if legalizing drugs, prostitution, and gambling will flush out a good number of gangs and organized crime syndicates in America.

While it may help with some, for the most part they will just move to other criminal activities.

I also have a friend from Nigeria who's told me the same thing. He used to give a black guy a ride to school every day, and not once did the guy ever thank him or offer to pay for gas.

Not to mention, I also went to a public school that was predominately black, and the other kids always used to give me a hard time just for being a "damn ******" in their school. I was the only white kid in my entire class, and though I was good to everyone, I never fit in.
Thought your whole post was interesting but only chose a part of it. I personally think that you've met more racist African Americans than whites because you have spent more time around blacks. Had it been the reverse, you would have met more racist whites.

Part of the problem is that teenagers are growing up with increasingly violent minds. Some voices in society argue that they don't know what they are doing, but a 16 year old with the capacity to keep beating on another human while they are yelling "Stop!" and "NO!" is a criminal born. Yeah, at this age they don't have all faculties matured and their hormones are haywire, which also often means that their processing of wrong and right is completely askew. They need some hard training. Teenage criminals unchecked become the violent adult criminals of society, in many cases.

They'd be totally starved for cash and unable to recruit new members. They may even have to have layoffs.....
