Actually...

In 2007, Virginia did mandate that female students receive the vaccine before being allowed to attend school. It wasn't until 2008 did they say that they would make it optional. So, it's now optional, but for one year, it was not. However, there are a number of other vaccines that are required in order for a child to attend public schools. Mainly stuff like Mumps, Rubella, etc.

As far as being a little closer to the topic...

On one hand, it is interesting that a majority of home-schooled students are Evangelical Christians, but on the other hand, it makes sense. If the schools are not to par for their standards, then it's good to know that they're doing something about it.

You know what comparison I'd like to see? Homeschooled students vs. IB students.

What is wrong with hone schooling? Maybe the parents want their kids to actually learn something. They don't need all the extra crap that the schools teach. It takes up unneccessary time. You don't have to deal with bulling, or who is popular and who is not. School is supposed to be about learning. And the public schools are not teaching the kids anything worth while these days.

It's easier to brainwash their children I'd guess.

Most homeschoolers are evangelicals because they are the one group that, even though they may disagree with a lot of things taught in public schools, they don't have very many of their own established schools....so for them, its usually a choice of public school or homeschool. Catholics don't usually need to homeschool if they don't care for public school, since the Catholic Church has probably the largest network of private schools in the world. The same can be said for Jews, Jews tend to run their own schools as well. Evangelical schools are not as common.

I'm sure there are many public school students and graduates (like myself) who will greatly disagree with you. With the advancement and growth in amount of AP, IB, and specialized programs, there's no reason why a public school student would not be able to learn anything "worth while" if he or she truly wanted to.

I loved the public schools I went to and was not taught anything that was "unnecessary". Not even the Latin I was forced to take in 6th grade (and subsequently took for many years after.....) has gone to waste. Yes, the school forced 6th graders to take Latin.

Yah...lol ok.

We should trust the government....because they couldn't POSSIBLY be brainwashing or teaching the kids wrong...

Fact of the matter is, public government-run schools tend to teach a lot of social programs and tend to be more liberal than a lot of parents want. Not to mention, 1 parent teaching 2-3 kids is a much better ratio than 1 teacher (and maybe a para) teaching 30 kids.

I know several women that homeschool their kids. They worked as teachers before having babies, and they use accredited curriculum. They are every bit as qualified as any public school teacher.

LOL. Is that what they're teaching in the public schools now? I guess since public schools keep lowering their standards so that the retards can compete, and lose many brighter students every year because of it, they need to fight back in the only manner they know: fear, loathing, and disinformation.

Homeschooled Students Excel in College
"Standardized test results for 16,000 home educated children, grades K-12, were analyzed in 1994 by researcher Dr. Brian Ray. He found the nationwide grand mean in reading for homeschoolers was at the 79th percentile; for language and math, the 73rd percentile. This ranking means home-educated students performed better than approximately 77% of the sample population on whom the test was normed. Nearly 80% of homeschooled children achieved individual scores above the national average and 54.7% of the 16,000 homeschoolers achieved individual scores in the top quarter of the population, more than double the number of conventional school students who score in the top quarter."

Can Homeschoolers Do Well in College?
"A new study published in The Journal of College Admission suggests that homeschool students enjoy higher ACT scores, grade point averages and graduation rates compared with other college students. The finding are especially interesting because there has been a paucity of research focused on how homeschooled students fare in college."

I will also add that they have more interest in their children and their children's education unlike many who see schools as a chance to get their kids out of their hair.

There is a big difference between education and indoctrintion.

Public schools are horrendous. Aside from teaching evolution the teachers are extremely conservative and backward. Of course that is considered "liberal" to all of the redneck folk from Arkansas, Alabama, and Texas.

So how come none of the homeschooled on this forum will admit they are home-schooled? They are so proud of home-schooling that they can't admit they are home-schooled? Why haven't we heard people say "I was home-schooled and proud of it"
