I hardly EVER had any store bought soft drinks, sugary snacks or chips when I was growing up and we certainly weren't POOR, it was just the way our family was raised, and it sure didn't make any of us "deprived".
Maybe your parents didn't want you to grow up to be a corporate junkie.

Sometimes small things like a birthday cake can mean a lot to a child, especially one whose life isn't that great in the first place.

You miss my point. Why should those who are adhering to the rules, be forced to pay for the irresponsibility of others?
My children rarely have any of the above, which is why I don't have a problem with it if they occasionally express the desire for a Dr. Pepper or a bag of chips. And I have the option of buying them for my children if I want to. It is MY decision.
Those parents making poor nutritional choices or buying crap food with their food stamps are far outnumbered by those parents who buy nutritionally sound foods with an occasional treat thrown in. These parents are perfectly capable of monitoring their children's junk food intake. They don't need all of these Food Stamp Nazis to do it for them.
20 % fresh fruit
30 % fresh vegetables
20% fresh meat....................................... ( Interchangeable % items )
10% canned fruit and vegetables
20% dairy products
Have the FS send you a form. You check the things you will use in 30 days. Its programmed in that you would prefer more veggies than fruit or more meat than dairy ( its a personalized system of HONEST food consumption ) Say you are a vegan or are dairy intolerant. Make it personalized for each dieter.
No more convienance stores giving you cash back, cigs , dope , liquor ,
Have an alternate system ... say you would prefer 10% packaged or store bought deli items, this is figured out in your total consumption . You are not deprived but you cannot use 100% on pizza snacks , Deli Boars Head Ham , expensive food product.
Do you think the gov't thought ( when food stamps were conceived ) : "Yea, here are your food stamps" . "Oh you want $ 20 each Lobster Tails , no problem" ?" Case of Dungeoness Crab Legs $ 50 dollars a case , no problem".....NOT !
BTW people, Aldis has GREAT rising crust pizzas for something around $3.68. Add some shredded cheese, pepperoni and some spices of choice and you have yourself one hell of a great tasting pizza. (All bought at Aldis)
So because you didn't have these things growing up, no one else should either? Do you have those things now?
I'm sorry, it's not OK to use those crusts. You have to make your own, from yeast. Do you know how hard it is to get yeast to rise here at this altitude? We'd never have homemade pizza if we had to do that!

Obviously we HAD birthday cakes etc - they just weren't STORE bought ffs. Heck my grandma even made "candy" at home.

I was simply pointing out that a lack of candy and sugary snacks has nothing to do with "fairness". Is it FAIR that kids whose parents are on FS presumably also can't AFFORD the latest and greatest "in thing" for their kids? Please.
LOL, just a fancy french word for what is after all a simple baked custard with a caramel sauce.
Well, I stand by my original post on the subject then. I'd much rather have creme brulee than crap, anyday.
