Oh because you find this scumbag to be so charming that he doesn't **** you off? It's funny to watch all of the semi-justification and deflection going on around here. Of course most of it prefaced with "there's never any excuse to beat up an old lady but..." they then break into excusing away this behavior because "racism" has "driven" this "poor" black guy to "snap." If this was a white guy, I'd love to see some of these same posters reaction. I can guarantee no one would worry about what "racism" he may have encountered.
I'm not defending this guy's behavior at all. To provide context though, I have been told by many friends who have been stationed in Korea that Koreans are racists ... not toward black people in particular, but toward all non Koreans, including whites. I have been warned if I go there that the daily racism is taxing and burdensome. This guy misinterpreted what was said to him, but he undoubtedly deals with openly racist attitudes and behaviors routinely. (For example, I have been told its very common for restaurants to refuse service to whites.. and I would presume blacks too.) He may have just snapped.
And again, THAT DOES NOT EXCUSE ATTACKING OLD PEOPLE. This guy should be embarrassed and ashamed for himself. If I could, I would force him to watch himself acting like that in a room of people telling him how cowardly and foolish he looks "bucking up" on an old man and defenseless old lady until I was sure he got it ... or at least got that absolutely no one was impressed with his behavior.
I'm worried about this too. I have also heard that there is a lot of racism, especially towards black people, from a Korean friend who lived in Korea her whole life and just moved here three years ago. Now this video is going viral and it will probably just reinforce already existing racist attitudes.
Like you, I don't excuse the guy's behavior but I am afraid that it will only worsen race relations.

Take note fellow C-Ders, Saranyc's post is the quintessential definition of a racist statement. I suggest everyone use that for gauging whether or not a post is racist or not. I would also like to point out another thing here: People that complain about ethnic people using hyphenates prefixed to American. This is why. People keep coming on here and saying "Black this and black that, African American this and African American that." It should have been just American this and American that. This guy doesn't just represent African Americans, he represents all Americans. When you admit that we can talk. It doesn't help the fact that you keep trying to separate us from other Americans. We are all Americans.
Now having said that, of course I do not condone this at all and it is embarassing to have had this filmed and broadcast for the world to see. He should have just gave a witty quip back and proceed to be about his business. Also, why is this on P&OC as opposed to the World Forum?

Not really. I've heard there is a lot of racism towards white people in Korea as well. Towards Chinese people as well, and anyone who is not Korean, really. I may be wrong but this is what I have heard. I wouldn't have a physical outburst like that but I would get tired of being discriminated against. I get tired of it as a blind person in a sighted world, so I can understand why racial minorities get tired of racism.
What's ridiculous is often time Black men use violence in any confrontation; they seem to be so challenged in just about every facet of life it's the only way they can feel powerful.

This is a prime example. A racist American looks at this video and concludes: "I will never accept these people as equals".
How many already-racist Koreans will draw the same conclusion?
It's not okay to be violent. But white people are violent all the time and yet that doesn't get chalked up to their entire race. That's the difference.
This guy is not making african americans or americans look good. Now people will see this and ignorantly think. "Well....I guess that's all black people..". Humans have a long way to go.

I think it's pretty obvious that this whatever it is is a vile racist. So when it says it doesn't want to see certain people as equals, it makes me happy to no end.

Whites do things like this too but someone like you wont get so pissed about that. I didn't have to even watch the video because all it is being used for is to take one person in one incident and stir up anger against blacks. Of course for you and the rest of the right wing cd crowd you wake up mad about black people breathing so it doesn't take much. Quit whining about a white not getting away with something. White guys get away with s&**( everyday that any ethnic back ground would receive the hardest punishment for but then again you own everything and hold nearly all positions of power so that is to be expected. Still don't go whining that you need to get away with even more abuses and breaking of laws and destroying peoples lives just because some black guy yelled at old people. Now go out and enjoy your unfair advantages for the day and stop being so mad at blacks we hurt ourselves enough that you don't have ton worry about it......so relax.
