In it, Washington also beseeched God "to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed..."
Wonder what happened...that's not a government I recognize as being much like what we have today.
Maybe because over the years we allowed God to become marginalized by nonsense called political correctness, to the point where the mention of God is attacked on every occasion in the public arena and the rights of non-believers become more important than those of believers.
For someone who made the sign of the cross over the turkey he pardoned to not mention God with reference to Thaksgiving shows some confused thinking.
I'm always wary of politicians invoking God, especially ones that have presidential aspirations or are in an election year. Most of the time it sounds very fake
I think a couple of posters here should be in the Religous forum, not political since it's a religious position they're arguing not controversial or political.
"Three of the Republican presidential candidates – Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum – issued Thanksgiving statements that omitted any references to God."

Obama wasn't alone now was he? "Gods" have no place in the political arena. Keep your fairytales behind the closed doors of your cult.
I agreed with everything you said up until then. I have my beliefs, and respect that other people have theirs. I could care less if Obama did or didn't mention God, his belief of lack of belief is not my concern or business. You had your point across, but had to add that last insult. You know damn well that insulting something as sacred and personal as someone's religous beliefs is just going to infuriate, so why not just keep it to yourself?

I hope it was intentional... 'cause you know.... there really is no god.
If there were no God, atheists would have no reason for being. Or, to put it another way, the existence of atheists proves there IS a God.

Try again.
I think it is a controversial and political issue.
How would you separate Washington's numerous mentions of God in his proclamation from the political arena?
Take all references of God out, and Washington would need a teleprompter to deliver the proclamation as it becomes nonsensical.
