Wanting a smoke free environment is not a liberal or conservative issue----its an issue for individuals and families who want to check into a family and not have to gag on smoke, have their eyes water, or risk allergies or other smoke related damage to their kids.
If you want to smoke after checking into a hotel, go outside for a walk and puff away.
We go overboard on these threads assigning blame to liberals or conservatives on health related issues-----using common sense, cigarette smoke is unhealty, and everyones lungs can use a break.
LOL. what was preventing them from saying "Sorry, no." in the first place?
Nothing except it's easier to blame it on the law than to standing in front of an irate smoker who is demanding you change your personal non-smoker's policy just for them.

Simple, don't check into a place that allows smoking. Problem solved!

....or perhaps they are tired of listening to irate non smokers who demand they change their policy for them?
Sorry, but you can't blame this change in the law on liberals. It's good a business position to take. More people ask to have their rooms changed after checking in because the rooms they were assigned smell bad than there are smokers who check in. It also costs the hotels and motels more money to maintain a room where smokers are because they have to dry clean the drapery and bed spreads more often, not to mention they have to paint more often and replace furniture and counter tops with burn marks more often. The hotels and motels can have a smoker's lounge where smokers can go and the management has a chance to sell them snacks and drinks while they smoke and their insurance rates go down. The law is good for their business.
well said. it sounds like you have also worked in the hotel industry at some point in your life. the industry is responding to what the majority of their guests want, non smoking rooms. the legislature in the states in question just took it to the next level. as WW indicated, far too many people come down after checking in wanting to move to a non smoking room because of the odor.
rooms where there have been smokers have to be deep cleaned and they do take longer, and since hotels operate on slim profit margins to begin with, and are in a highly competitive industry, they are goin to do what it takes to reduce their costs as much as possible.
one more thing, many people suffer from asthma and other respiratory issues, and they can be exacerbated by cigar and cigarette smoke.
Yes, you can raise the price for the rooms but what if they're fully booked and the only ones left are the smoking ones and the customers who want to book are not smokers? Guess where the non smokers will end up staying?
Michigan and Wisconsin have banned smoking in hotels. This happened last year. Jennifer Granholm is an anti-freedom slob and a left wing zealot. It's no wonder that Michigan elected a Republican this time for Governor.
My wife and I recently went on vacation down south. Coming back north we discovered that we couldn't get a smoking room at any hotel in WI or MI.
Why would these states discourage tourism? Tourism is one of Michigan's biggest industries. It's stupid.
If someone smokes in a hotel room -- IT WILL NOT KILL THE FAMILY IN THE NEXT ROOM. Get it Democrats?
Why is it that whenever LIBERALS are in charge ..... AMERICANS lose their FREEDOM?
You are correct, I gained so much from the Patriot Act.
Short sightedness and tunnel vision. Your posts are classic ignorance.

I'm allergic to perfume, flowers, and most air-fresheners and soaps/detergents. But that's my issue, and I'd never expect a hotel to cater to my personal allergies! I'll just take a pill if it gets bad, bring my own pillow (to avoid having my nose on their detergent) and soaps, or choose a different hotel if their scents are particularly bad... for example I avoid the MGM Grand in Vegas now, since they pump a VERY strong air-freshener throughout their air ducts. Ironically, they do that to cover the smokey smell from the casino.
Furthermore, some people are allergic to dogs & cats, yet many hotels allow pets with a cleaning deposit. So if smoking bothers you, find a non-smoking hotel (they exist everywhere these days), or specifically demand a non-smoking room... same goes for people allergic to pets, however there's no option for people with my allergies. Oh well, 'tis life. If I were the type who couldn't handle dealing with this stuff, I'd probably avoid traveling or get an RV instead. Guess you vehement anti-smoking folks don't travel to Reno, Vegas, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Europe or Asia - huh?
P.S. I'm a liberal AND a smoker, so clearly we're not all trying to ban smoking... although I'm more of a Libertarian than Democrat, which might negate the original point.
