Well, you are entitled to believe what you want, even if that belief is false. The fact is that the government programs conservative deride are successful.

The red line shows poverty among those 65 and older; the blue line shows minors; and the yellow line shows those 18 to 64. You’ll notice that by the end of the Clinton era, there was a noticeable drop in poverty rates, especially among children, while over the last decade, conditions have deteriorated for those under 64.

But among seniors, poverty rates have been declining steadily for decades, and as of 2010, despite growing poverty throughout the economy, Khimm noted, “[O]lder Americans are even less likely to be in poverty than they were during the start of the recession…. [T]he poverty rate for seniors is at a record low: in 2009, it was at 8.9 percent, and it’s remained essentially flat since then.”

This isn’t an accident and it’s not a fluke. Indeed, note that on the left side of the chart, as of a half-century ago, those most likely to be in poverty were seniors.

So what happened? Social Security and Medicare happened. These pillars of modern American life have brought a degree of stability and economic security to millions of older people who’ve left the workforce.
Washington Monthly
But getting back to the thread topic, "The middle class is suffering and the Republicans want to cut taxes for the wealthy," this fact is self-evident from this chart:

Apologists for rising inequality often argue that since most Americans’ income has risen despite rising inequality, there’s no reason to complain about inequality other than envy. But here we clearly see that GDP per capital (average) is rising but median family income is not rising, which indicates that high gains are concentrated in the top brackets. Thus, the middle class is suffering and the Republicans want to cut taxes for the wealthy.

That's precisely why the middle-class must regain control of the political process.

Look at where we are; the middle-class has the vast majority of the population and the policies of the Republican Party benefit the wealthy and powerful at the great expense of the average worker. Yet, a large part of the middle-class will repeatedly vote for the Republican Party that is less likely to protect their safety, less likely to protect their jobs, and less likely to benefit them economically.

With Republicans sabotaging every attempt for progress, what do you expect?

Let's see a couple of examples, the GOP holds the nation hostage to get the Bush tax-cuts extended, which in all rights should have expired.

The Congress passed a creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, with the GOP kicking and screaming -- but the GOP was successful at pulling some teeth out of the bureau, then they refuse to approve anyone, regardless of qualifications, to head the bureau.

The GOP holds up the jobs bill that would help get Americans back to work.

The Republicans didn't sign any bills making them into law..the President did.

Wake up and see what is getting to his desk in record time with veto proof YES votes on both sides.

When it comes to more central authority in the name of National Security Congress is 100% bipartisan.
