I doubt the validity of this pole. I don't think we have gotten to that place yet, and in fact I believe we are seeing evidence of a return to our moral roots, not the opposite. Recent polling indicates that a mojority are now pro-life, whereas a few years ago, pro-"choice" was still the majority view.
An atheistic world view, I believe, would have dire consequences for a freedom loving people. Our laws are based on principles that have been passed down from generations of God fearing people, Jews and Christians alike, and are rooted in Biblical principles, and the Ten Comandments.
A President with no moral underpinning (on what basis does an atheist determine morallity?) could easily become a tyrannical and evil dictator.
I would add that we aren't far from that now, under Obama. At least he claims to have a belief in God, even if much of what he believes is out of the mainstream of Christianity. Imagine one a hundred times worse. We could wind up with someone who would think it fine for Muslims in this country to practice their religion as they wish, allowing them to freely exercise their belief in "honor killing."
Imagine also what an an athiest President's view of our unalienable rights, as enumerated in the Declaration of Independence, might be? Meaningless, perhaps? He might belive that rights come from government, and can be created or taken away as the government sees fit.
Is that the kind of government you want?
An atheist determines morality just as everyone else - based on one's conscience. Is this really how people think? That atheists have no morals?
Do you think that atheists think it's okay to murder people, to lie, cheat and steal? Really?
How absurd. There are basic human rules that most people follow, regardless. People break them too, regardless. I bet Jerry Sandusky identifies as a good Christian dude.
Unalienable rights are something people are endowed with by virtue of being born, one doesn't have to believe they've been bestowed by God in order to exist.
I would argue that many rights are taken away from people in the name of God, by rabid believers of some self serving creed, more so than by people that believe unalienable rights are just that. Atheists tend to be against extremist religious practices, so I think your "honor killing" example would hold less water, not more.
Laws are simple societal guidelines that we need to follow to prevent civilization from falling apart. Those laws have always existed in some form or another. Although there were laws regarding burning heretics and witches at the stake, not too long ago. Those were good Christian laws too, perhaps we should uphold those?
Society is in danger from people in powerful positions being corrupted by their own authority. It doesn't matter what religion you are or aren't, we need checks and balances against it. Making sure someone at the top is Christian doesn't ensure a damn thing.
Religion does not rule this country. You want to see religion ruling a country then just look to the ME countries.
If anything, I see anti-religion trying to get a foothold. There is separation of Church and State and it works.
Don't go trying to fix something that is not broken.
I believe it is good to have a man who knows he is not the ultimate ruler of himself. If they truly believe in God it is a plus. If they think themselves as a god then the country would easily be ruled by a dictator if they don't have to answer to their maker.

The conscious can be seared and one can be desensitized and accept all kinds of behavior as the mind dictates. This was done by Hitler who used God as HIS tool to manipulate the masses. Hitler performed all kinds of hideous experiments and operations on people. A madman driven by ego can be very dangerous. They will use all tools to get to their goals.
I'd be satisfied with a president who keeps his beliefs to himself (and of course who is competent in other ways.) I'd like to vote for an atheist, but it isn't my first requirement; Bob Dole is basically agnostic, but I didn't vote for him.
