The problem being that the EU and many other parts of the world refuse to supply the US with the necessary drugs to carry out such executions, hence the use of untried cocktails of drugs, which clearly aren't that effective.

Europe's moral stand has U.S. states running out of execution drugs, complicating capital punishment - CBS News

Given the lack of effective drugs then surely it's better to look at alternatives to the administration of drugs such as hanging or firing squad both of which are more humane than experimenting with unknown drug cocktails and hoping it works.

I am not a supporter of the death penalty, but surely if you are going to execute people it should not involve some kind of experimentation with drugs or a fingers crossed it works approach.

They should be executed quickly, humanely and as effectively as possible, rather than turn the whole thing in to some kind of macabre freak show, which is what happened in Oklahoma the other day.

Botched execution could slam brakes on death penalty

The man was a monster. That brave 19 yr old girl had to watch them dig her own grave for 20 minutes and then after being shot once already, wait while he fixed the gun so he could shoot her again. Sick piece of trash.

I'm not sure. At one point they stopped the execution to inspect him to see why it was taking so long. Maybe they removed the straps then.

For those who celebrate this felon's suffering: We are not a barbarian nation. We aren't served well by lowering ourselves to the level of criminals and delighting in someone suffering as they die. Yes, he was a monster who deserved to die, but it speaks pretty poorly of our values if we are celebrating needless torture.

I'm in favor of the death penalty in principle, but not in practice. We'd be better off just letting people like this rot away in prison for the rest of their lives.

You misunderstand that "no sympathy" does not equal "delight". I don't "delight" in it, I just have no sympathy.

Please provide sources to support your claim "... who celebrate this felon's suffering"

Who 'celebrated' his suffering?

Just because lethal injection has gone bad, doesn't mean we are living a barbarian nation. Oh the horror, fake outrage raises its head..

Many scientists and doctors support lethal injection and still view it as the most humane method of execution. (well, nothing is perfect)

Not much less.

Society owes him nothing.

Just get rid of him in the way that causes the least further trouble for society.

Doesn't matter if he doesn't like it. He gave up his right to make that choice when he murdered the girl.

for centuries the guillotine was not cruel and unusual punishment, and neither was hanging, the firing squad, the gas chamber, and the electric chair. granted the electric chair was in use for decades not centuries. now we have lethal injection, so when is that going to be deemed cruel and unusual punishment?
