There was no reason to ask for her name and date of birth and then call it in to dispatch for a background check.
It is an abuse of power to detain a pedestrian and call in for a background check when they are not suspected in any crime.
Her only embellishment was that they sounded their siren - but she had earbuds on an some sound made her turn around. The police concede they turned on their emergency lights.
You didn't read the story did you? They had every reason to ask for her name and ID. She was not only suspected of a crime, they witnessed her committing a crime.

The video cam does not explain a thing unless there are locals laws which mandate the direction folks can walk in their communities. The street certainly isn't a busy thorough fare so what is the problem and why was she stopped? I don't have a clue whether this was racial profiling but It is NOT clear why she was stopped, unless it was just another power play by the police.
Please read the story before you comment and are proven wrong, it was perfectly clear why she was stopped.. She was impeding traffic, there was a truck behind her who couldn't pass because she was in the way. She was stopped for her own safety.

Allegedly the cops saw a truck almost hit her - but the video starts after this alleged incident when the cops are far behind her.
The Police were approaching from the opposite direction when they observed the violation. They turned around to ask her to walk on the correct side of the street for her own safety. Can't anyone read?
The sad thing is that she seems to be a very intelligent and accomplished person. Now she will be remembered for the day she lied, not for all she did before that.

Just watched the beginning of the video. I didn't see any racism. And the coppers were polite. And the prof. was polite.
BUT, I see no reason for the coppers to request the prof's. ID and name and dob. Just tell her that she should walk on the sidewalk as walking in the street is dangerous.

That is not a valid reason to call dispatch and run their name against criminal databases.

That's how police work is conducted.. But ..please..do continue to tell us your misunderstandings
Walking in the street is a criminal offense...an officer can choose...or may be required by policy to check criminal history and confirm Id while issuing a cite for an infraction or misdemeanor...
This is done thru NCIC.. And the local clets type system... Some departments aren't automated.which requires use of radio.. There's a plethora of other good reasons
Warrants.. Bolos.. On and on

again, while it is not illegal to walk in the street, as far as i know, it is illegal to impede traffic, even if it is one vehicle that you didnt see. second, the officers didnt tell her she couldnt run in the street, they actually told her that it is SAFER to run facing traffic, rather than have traffic behind her.
contrary to popular opinion these days, cops do a lot of things by procedure, regardless of skin color. now your two might agree with ms bland that this was a racial thing, but the reality is that it wasnt, if these cops were truly racist and doing it just to hassle her, they would probably have written her a ticket for impeding traffic instead of letting her go on her way.
It is not only illegal.. But incredibly dumb..
It may show blatent arrogance...who knows
WTF is wrong with her? She's walking down the wrong side of the road (when there is a sidewalk 5 feet away) flapping her arms like a damn chicken. Mentally disturbed person? Amazing the kooks the police have to deal with every day.
