..but the camera says otherwise.

A Texas journalism professor's explosive charge that police hassled her for "walking while black," a claim lodged in a guest column in the state's biggest newspaper, doesn't square with the videotape, according to the police chief.

The incident occurred when Dorothy Bland, dean of the journalism school at the University of North Texas, was taking a power walk on the morning of Oct. 24 in her neighborhood in the northeast Texas town of Corinth. In a column in the Dallas Morning News four days later, the former newspaper editor described her encounter with two local cops in terms that put the police in a bad light.

There was no reason to ask for her name and date of birth and then call it in to dispatch for a background check.
It is an abuse of power to detain a pedestrian and call in for a background check when they are not suspected in any crime.

Her only embellishment was that they sounded their siren - but she had earbuds on an some sound made her turn around. The police concede they turned on their emergency lights.

walking down the middle of a street flapping her arms like a maniac and impeding traffic when there are sidewalks on either side is a pretty good reason.

Racism? By whom? This video of Texas cops stopping a black professor is a racial ‘Rorschach test’
Quote:
“If we didn’t have the video, these officers would have serious allegations against them,” police chief Debra Walthall told Fox News. “Every white officer that stops an African American does not constitute racial profiling.”

Now it is Bland, not the cops, who is facing pressure as nearly 2,500 people have signed a petition urging UNT to fire her.

rubbish, it is standard procedure to ask for ID when police have lawful contact with a person in an incident like this. and if they dont have ID, they then ask for name and d.o.b. these cops did nothing wrong.

as for turning on their emergency lights, they do that for good reason as well, and that is to let oncoming motorists that the car is stopped and officers are in the area, so that motorists can avoid hitting the police car or the officers, or the person the officers are having contact with.

and dont forget that the pedestrian was in fact in the wrong by running in the street and impeding traffic, and they could have cited her for the incident, but they DIDNT.

That is not a valid reason to call dispatch and run their name against criminal databases.

it is a perfectly valid reason, the cops have no idea who she is, that is why they ask for ID, and that is why when no ID is forth coming they call it in. the woman could have been lying about who she was, and might have had felony warrants out for her arrest.

in the end, the cop were professional, and followed procedure, and did NOTHING wrong.

The nice cops advised her to break the law on the other side of the street for own safety.

They knew better than to say, "Get on the sidewalk."

According to the Lefties here just stopping and asking a Black person for ID is criminal on the cops part.
