Washington Post admits notorious article accusing websites of spreading fake Russian news may have been a bit fake

The Washington Post has appended its story accusing 'Russia of spreading fake news', saying it cannot vouch for the research of its independent 'experts.'

The article, - the newspaper's most read story the day it was published - was met with fierce backlash and even threats of legal action from some of the websites that felt they had been unfairly labelled.

It appears to try and distance the newspaper from its source. 'The Post, which did not name any of the sites, does not itself vouch for the validity of PropOrNot's findings regarding any individual media outlet, nor did the article purport to do so,' the note stated.

Good grief.

"Cannot vouch for the research" does not equal fake!

It does add a bit of doubt..but the fact the the WP retracted..to some extent..shows their commitment---

as an aside...I'm convinced that there were Russian trolls right here at C-D. Could I prove it, no.

I do not, in any way, shape or form...believe that the Washington Post is a fake news site or that they knowingly print 'fake news'.

Why would Trump address the CIA on TV?? All he has to do is show up at his intel briefings.

Trump's campaign manager is a Russian operative trying to bring down Ukraine democracy. Putin rigs the election for Trump (whether that was the difference is debatable). Trump installs a good friend and confidant of Putin as SoS. Something is fishy.

You would be much better off disregarding fake news sites like the WP.

You're so ignorant you don't even know what MainStreamMedia is.To all the Trumpettes out there it is any media ,paper, TV or internet that is against Donald Trump or says something that is different then from the Trump camp.people who scream this are IGNORANT and it's not hard to see who elected Donald Trump ,it was the uneducated ignorantly racist ,rust belt and Old white men.You guys are so ignorant you would probably think the Washington Post was lying about Watergate and Nixon was inocent!

They posted an article that was not correct because (they claim) they didn't confirm their source's "research".

Let's see, people post information they can't confirm about pizzagate, and you dems say that is fake news, and has to be stopped.

The Washington Post writes an article they don't confirm, and turns out to be false, but somehow that's ok with you dems.

I understand that you are embarrassed because I just proved you are posting fake news sources, but rather than be embarrassed, you should learn something from this, don't post sources from the Washington Post.

<expletive deleted>, any foreign governments that might actually be hacking or conducting information campaigns on us must be laughing their behinds off at people like you. You're doing their work for them, rather than thinking critically.

LoL! I'm not a Democrat---so you can quit with the 'you dems'--I'm more than willing to give Trump his chance to do well for our country..and I've said so..many times.

Had to look up.."pizzagate"---My take..I don't care..period. Has nothing to do with governing our country.

Freedom of speech is not limited by honesty...as most of us know.

Journalists are supposed to be held to a higher standard. Problem is, now every bozo with a laptop thinks he/she's a journalist.

As to the WP article in question..it has not been 'proven to be false". Just not proven to be true. There is a difference.

Not at all embarrassed--and you've proved nothing--and I'll continue to read the WP...and make up my own mind.

I would say I am thinking critically, because I only believe things that can be proven true.

There has been no evidence released to prove that the Russians interfered with the election.

Did you even read the hit piece by the WP claiming that the CIA said the Russians interfered with the election?

The article even admits that this is no hard evidence, and that the CIA didn't say the Russian's goal was to get Trump elected.

It's you that have failed to think critically, or even think at all. Heck, you obviously couldn't even be bothered to read the Washington Post article.

Awesome. Then we are in violent agreement a full, UNBIASED investigation is needed to either prove or DISPROVE there was interference. Because anything else...is not thinking critically. It is blindly supporting one side or the other.

I could personally care less who wins. I DO care, deeply, that our voting system delivers accurate results.

Full disclosure: someone may have tried to interfere, but if it wasn't direct (e.g. articles, etc.), I don't think it would change a thing-but I'd sure like to know it was going on, although it may change nothing. People made up their own minds based on all their sources of information, and I can't help it if someone comes to a conclusion I may not agree with. But they should *know* if the information was distributed by a foreign government, designed to help one candidate or another. That would discourage me that anyone thought that was legitimate.

If it was direct (hacking, altering actual votes)-that's what I'm concerned about. Deeply. Aren't you?
