I did volunteer leadership while as a boy as young as 15, after earning the rank of Eagle Scout. I lived the Scout Oath and Law as best I could. The Boy Scouts and Scouters (adult leaders) in West Virginia should feel ashamed of themselves for booing President Obama and cheering BLANTANT partisan politics from a man who has never and will never live by a moral code like the Scout Law.
What you saw were some adolescents caught up in the moment.

And, frankly, those same boys may have heard the same comments in their own living rooms, so it didn't occur to them to be out of place to hear the president say what their parents said.

And no offense but this sounds a bit overly dramatic. Remember these are just kids- they responded like most kids would. I don't like it, but 42 years in the program- trust me this isn't surprising reaction to the kind of speech he made.

This is a great teaching moment for us and our Troop. It certainly is.
Roosevelt was an ardent supporter of the nascent Boy Scout movement in its early years. As a former U.S. president, he served as honorary vice president of the BSA and was the first commissioner of the Nassau County Council. Was he founder? No, that would be William D. Boyce, but Roosevelt was certainly very influential in the establishment of the BSA.

LOL to that.

Exactly.

Where were their leaders?

Do you have a better solution?

With foresight, they could have instructed all the leaders to ensure that their Scouts did not get caught up in Trump's BS. Clearly, they knew that chanting might occur and warned about this.

Yet here we are.

I think it happened, Ralph. The comment about who the **** would want to talk about politics in front of the Boy Scouts was weird and out of place. It seemed to come out of left field, which means it absolutely did not come out of left field. Somebody said something, and Trump, as usual, ignored them.

You did not see 40,000 Scouts cheering what Trump was saying.

You saw 40,000 Scouts cheering the POTUS.

It's an error to presume that all of them necessarily parsed what was being said.

It's an error to presume that all of them were doing anything more than participating in the moment--something adolescent boys will have a tendency to do.

It's an error to presume that even if they did parse the speech, and then realized they disagreed with it, that'd they necessarily take an immediate protest action. Most adolescents are not that politically aware and politically astute to immediately say, "Wait a minute" and then formulate an instantaneous response.

If you've been to Jamboree, you know that over ten days the boys are urged to join in to many mass participation events...it's what they do. This was another one, just a few minutes out of ten days of mass enthusiasm for a bunch of young teenaged boys.

Blaming them is silly. They're the victims.

I don't understand why you keep asking this, GotHere. I've already relayed that our Scoutmaster friend who is currently attending Jamboree with his son and others from our district reacted immediately to quell any inappropriate behavior from those in his charge, at least according to a text my son received from one of the Scouts in his unit. I expect to hear more when they return on Monday, but I have no doubt that our friend responded strongly. It is not in his character to abide nonsense like that.

Huge mistake on the scouts part. they should have known how Trump would act. A smart move would have been banning all media of any form.. it would have ended it without having to withdraw the invite.

Surbaugh said the invitation to the sitting President to visit the Jamboree is a "longstanding tradition" dating to 1937.
"It is in no way an endorsement of any person, party or policies," Surbaugh said. "For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained nonpartisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.
