That the Scouts booed a former President and cheered Trump's nasty comments tells me the character development mission has gone astray. What kind of values are you instilling in these boys anyway?

There may be wonderful things happening at the troop level. Who knows?

But at the organization level, Boy Scouts of America aligned themselves with Trump and his nonsense.

So be it.
What kind of values am I instilling in these boys these days? My family believes deeply in the values of the Scout Oath and Law and have worked very diligently to live them ourselves, so we set a good example for our children, both those we have raised and those entrusted to our care through the Scout program.

Would your Scouts have been booing and cheering along with Trump?

I would certainly hope not, but I can't guarantee it. I can tell you for certain that I would not have done so, and I would not have tolerated it had it happened in my presence. This is feeling quite personal all of a sudden. Have I given you a reason to assume that I find that behavior acceptable?

I probably would have. Why not? There's no reason to not get swept up in the mood. Why not clap/cheer on the president and whatnot? That's what people generally do. They cheer on the speaker. You generally have to say really, really, awful things for that not to happen. He didn't say anything really, really awful...just pretty bad.

And the yacht comment was slightly above nothing. In my troop, one kid brought porno mags. When we were about 14 or 15 someone brought a murder mystery book in which a serial killer raped and ate women. It was extremely graphic. The scout read it to us and called it "story time." If mothers don't want their children hearing things like that, they should keep them as far away from other 12 year old boys as possible, IMO.

Nothing can excuse what 45 did.

Why are you not defending what we teach as more important than ever, even if we progress unsteadily toward our goals or even fail completely at times. If not the Scouts, then who?

I'm not cheering the destruction. Far from it. I'm heartsick about it.

Not a single leader got their troop up and walked out.

Not a single organizer said enough of this nonsense and pulled the plug on this political rally.

All the time and effort put into guiding wild boys into good men only to send them off to cheer and boo along with this sorry excuse for a President.

When our boys crossed over to Boy Scouts, this is not at all what we had in mind.

This sentiment is apparently shared by others whose sons are still in Scouting.

No. Not at all.

I'm trying to understand why Scout leaders such as yourself found it acceptable. Why they stood around while the boys entrusted to their care were an "enthusiastic and vocal" audience at was was obviously a political rally.

Even the Trump minions must have realized this was a poor idea.

By the way, if this had been Obama encouraging the boys to boo about Bush and hinting around about partying on yachts and so forth, I would feel exactly the same --that the Boys Scouts had no business mixed up in this.

Parents don't send their sons to Scouts to listen to stories of serial killers raping and eating women. What's the matter with you?

Sure boys are interested in porn. Are Boy Scouts promoting this now as well?

As to getting swept up into the mood to boo and cheer along with Trump, apparently your no-big-deal shrug is not shared by leaders and parents across the country. From what I understand, there's been somewhat of a negative response.

Scouting is to help guide boys grow up to be men of good character. -- Fires. Camp outs. Challenge courses. Derby races. Doing good deeds. ...

Most families know that BSA is a conservative organization. But I'd bet good money that most parents don't sign up their sons in hopes they will be participating in Hitler-like youth rallies.
