Democrats are still upset about Garland. And you would be too if the situation was reversed
Let’s be honest here. Obama knew whoever he picked had zero chance of being confirmed. If he actually thought he’d get confirmation of a Supreme Court Justice, he would have picked someone far less conservative. He picked Garland so they could have something to outrage the regular democratic voters when the Republican majority did what it was inevitably going to do.
I can honestly say I wouldn’t be upset if the shoe were on the other foot. I would absolutely expect a Democratic controlled senate to not confirm a Republican president’s nominee during a presidential election year. They’re the ones who added all this drama to senate confirmations anyway.
This pretty much sums up the Left's reaction. These NYU students (and 1 professor) were asked how they liked the pick. They all thought the pick was HORRENDOUS. Problem is, it hadn't been announced yet.
He does seem like he's pretty much establishment and has the backing of the DC power brokers. So, yeah, I'd say some kind of deal was brokered and he's pretty much guaranteed to go through without much debate. If the left wants to waste time protesting him and it gets them away from doing other damage, whatever. It's a dog and pony show.

I think I need more information before deciding on how I feel.
I'm probably a somewhat left of center moderate. I expect that the nominated justice would be on the conservative side of things, that Kennedy was still on the conservative side of things, and unlike the previous instance, this is not a stolen seat. Also, as much as I dislike Trump, I don't think he's interested in putting conservative ideologues on the Supreme Court. So is Kavanaugh basically expected to be a slightly more conservative Kennedy? Or is he somebody that is going to push the court hard to the right?

I've heard Kavanaugh described as 'center-right', and as 'Roberts 2.0' (meaning Chief Justice Roberts-like).
