The US is about the same size, geographically, as Europe. The continent of Europe is comprised of 50 countries (https://www.whatarethe7continents.co...ntries-europe/). Each of these countries, generally, has its own language.

Imagine what the US would be like if each of the 50 states spoke a unique language.

It's not "racist" to expect people in the US to speak English. Speaking English is one of the shared, common traits of Americans that helps us bind into a common culture.

It would be like the European Union. Strong local governments (in our case states), and weaker governance over the entire union - but still economically sound. It's a conservative dream -- weaker federal government, lower taxation at the federal level and empowered states. And, then, yes, the states would probably adopt their own languages/dialects, where the northeast would stick to primarily English as our ancestors spoke, and the southwestern states would either speak Spanish with English words thrown in our the other way around.

Acting as this gas station attendant did towards another person is simply out of line. Especially considering that her job is customer service. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States and is more common is areas like San Jose. One shouldn't be surprised by it or expect it not to be spoken. The simple lack of common sense and awareness this attendant had is what led to her fate of getting fired.

European Union has no common language, other than the language of international business: English.

I'm pretty sure that was the poster's point. Being like the European Union would imply opportunity for multiple languages (an opportunity that actually already exists).

When it's a private conversation between people that don't involve you, it is rude, inconsiderate, arrogant, and ethnocentric to butt in on someone with their racist, bigoted prejudices and assumptions.

The irony is that the lady recording the video is a much better representative of the English language thatn Bubba Jane behind the counter.

Personally, I love to hear other languages spoken even when I can't understand a word of it. Hearing folks speak in their native tongue is lovely to me.

I do agree with her being fired because this DID HAPPEN ON THE JOB. If it was off the job then people shouldn't be punished for what they do in their personal life.

That said, most Hispanic immigrants do refuse to learn English and resist assimilating into our culture but that's part of freedom in America. To them their language is a symbol of their resistance to American culture.

And you know this personally since you speak to a lot of non-English speaking immigrants?

Actually the statistics show they are assimilating as quickly as other demographic groups in the past.

The racists need to go back to their white only trailer park and hit the meth.

Racists tend to be too stupid to adapt to change.
