Whether a an employer fires someone for what that person does in their personal life is up to the employer. No one has a right to a job. It has nothing to do with punishment.

It's not that they actively refuse to learn English; they simply don't need to. There's enough people here who speak Spanish (in fact, it's the second most commonly spoken language, and the second fastest growing in the United States). They assimilate immediately into our hispanic American culture as it exists across southern border counties and even in pockets across the nation. Over time they assimilate into American culture (which, as you can see by the growth of the Spanish language -- is largely Spanish speaking). There's no active resistance.

I have personally witnessed that in Fl - it got hot and in the end the Hispanic man pulled out his Vet card said served 20 yrs was a wounded veteran from Puerto Rico and the constitution gave him the right to speak anything he dam well pleased and to mind his own business as he was not talking to him ! That part I really don’t get. Why are people butting in others conversations???

In an earlier post, when called out on you equating Spanish speaking people with illegal immigration, you denied it. Now you just affirmed it.

Let me know when you've made up your mind, but in any case, you have pretty much shown your xenophobic and ethnocentric disdain for folks who speak Spanish and we know where you stand.

Again, why on earth is it your business what language other people speak to each other? If they're not addressing you, again, it's none of your concerns. Butt out. Or should I say, no es de tu incumbencia? Or "m guan nay see" in Cantonese?

Assumptions get you in trouble. Unfounded comments. Many have never had the opportunity to learn. If you need to learn a new language - how many man hours do you need ?? Many just working, raising families or never had college or higher learning to learn a language.

That's simply rubbish.

They're like any other immigrant group in America - maybe abuela (like nonna) has more difficulty learning English, but their kids and grandkids will know English well, and often lose their Spanish fluency in the process.

She is in San Jose which also has a large Asian population but I bet she doesn't flip out if they spoke in their native languages. The illegal immigration issue has fueled this hatred toward Spanish speakers in this country which by the way doesn't have a official language.

Could you tell that to my uncle & cousins who got here in their late 30's learned English and became American citizens?..or perhaps to my nieces & nephews who are hispanic but can barely speak any Spanish (much to my dismay)?

I've noticed that during the Dreamers debate, all the Dreamers they put in front of the news cameras - supposed to represent the best and brightest of them- still speak with pronounced Mexican accents. And they want to convince us that these people are American like us? Most of them seem culturally and linguistically more at home in Mexico or another Latin American country than in America.

"American culture" is not Spanish speaking. Yes there are areas in our country where foreign cultures predominate such as South Florida and South Texas but that is not mainstream American culture though. Assimilating into American culture includes learning to speak English fluently.

I personally am in favor of making English the official language of the US. Every liberal European country also has an official language, including liberal France and liberal Germany.
