We heard for 8 years under Obama "does he think he's a dictator", I'm sure there will be an outcry from some of the red state governors like Texas and Florida. They will not stand for this abuse of power.
Trump said that the PRESIDENT has all authority, not he himself,, but the OFFICE OF PRESIDENT. He clarified this.
He is president and he is in charge. He also said that he will work with the governors, in other words, even though his job title gives him the authority to do so, he does not use it forcefully, even though he has the right to.
this made everyone's hair on fire, but he was stating the authority that the Office of President gives him.
Perhaps not yet. However, he could declare a federal emergency and implement martial law. There is no judicial review. The declaration of an emergency is a power inherent to a head-of-State.
The president's authority to declare martial law on a national basis is limited to cases involving "Rebellion or Invasion." (US Const. Art. 1 Sec. 9). A pandemic is neither. The president can mobilize the national guard without the consent of the governors, but it's difficult to imagine how mobilized reserves can force a state to "reopen" a state's economy.
Trump's "total authority" to reopen the economy is like the Wizard of Oz, his awesome powers are all smoke, noise and bluster. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
I get the overall gist of President Trump's statement, and he wants to "set the record straight" that he is in charge. However, I think he went about it a bit clunky and the wrong way.
He is setting up such a clash with governors this way. Why not say he will "work with governors" on opening up the economy in the best and most efficient way possible, so that everyone can get back to work quickly and safely?
This is Trump's communication issue that I dislike at times. He rubs people the wrong way with his direct, in-your-face, my-way-or-the-highway approach, and it works often, but sometimes it creates more problems. This is one of those times. Ugh.
We know why the Governors want to keep the panic going... it’s not about health safety...it’s about political power..if they can stretch this until November Trump is finished and they know it....Democrats are disgusting human beings...
He said he had total authority as president to lift restrictions. "Its about political power" by the governors, did you really say that.
Quote:
Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump falsely claimed on Monday that, as President, he has "total" authority to decide to lift restrictions governors have imposed to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
"When somebody's the President of the United States, the authority is total, and that's the way it's got to be," Trump said at a bitter White House coronavirus briefing.
Trump then said: "The authority of the President of the United States having to do with the subject we're talking about is total." And after speaking about local governments, he said, "They can't do anything without the approval of the President of the United States."

I think this is my biggest problem too. He might not always DO the wrong things, but he almost always SAYS the wrong things.
I think when push comes to shove, he'll do the right thing and not attempt to interfere with the governors running their states, but the fact that he felt the need to run his mouth is why a lot of people don't like him even when they don't always disagree with what he actually ends up doing.
