Because the mask IS NOT PROTECTING ME. it is protecting others *from* me. I am far more likely to carry asymptomatically than to die of this. Other people are at higher risk and I want to help mitigate the spread. FOR THEM.
This is the caring way. It doesn’t have to impact me for it to be important.
For the non mask wearing crowd that thinks they are useless .....if you ever have surgery make sure you tell your surgeon and nurses to go ahead and cough and sneeze and breathe into whatever cavity they open.

So what you are saying is that the face mask they have on wont protect them?

right - there's lots of that kinda thing right now: If YOU are wrong, people die. If I am wrong - people itch.
If there's a 0.1% chance I am right - and you are wrong - only a bozo would choose to avoid the itch.
Meantime - Rowingfiend - if you have ANY link to support your statement that the masks don't work to reduce a sick person's spread of virus-y stuff - please post it. I've not seen one.
Well I’m not sick so you aren’t getting any snot from me. So why again am I forced to wear a mask? And don’t tell me it’s sometimes asymptomatic. I know. I haven’t been within 6 feet of a human being in over a month so I know I don’t have it.
I don't know where you live, but here in the South it's allergy season, and people everywhere are sniffing and sneezing. Someone could be an asymptomatic carrier of coronavirus, yet still be spreading it everywhere because of allergies. Hardly a day goes by lately where I don't sneeze at least a few times a day, and if I'm in a store when it happens I'm sure other people will appreciate me wearing a mask.
The risk of death is so ridiculously small that I am willing to accept that risk. If you are wearing the PPE you feel is making you safe, than why does it matter if others aren't; If its that big of a concern, perhaps you shouldn't leave the house.
Have you read any of the stories about some of those who have recovered from Covid? It's not like getting over the flu in some instances. Some still have organ damage. Getting this virus isn't a risk that many want to take, including me.

I personally know 3 people that have tested positive, one being high risk. All 3 have recovered and never needed anymore than a little bed rest. The media doesn't want to tell you about those stories, they want to tell you about the 1 story that was agonizing and make it sound like every case is the same.

My son has permanent lung damage from rhinovirus. Are you going to hide from the common cold now?
