1) People are renouncing their citizenship for tax purposes, and it really only affects wealthy people and people who are already outside of the country and don't plan on returning.

2) For people in the United States, no one wants to renounce, they either want to secede, or to seize power.

Who here would do it if it came to it?

I don't know if I would but I could since I'm a dual citizen (Ireland).

Did you immigrate or go through your ancestry? Do they still tax you from there? I believe the US is the only country that taxes people even if they do not live here.

No. There isn't a place for me anywhere else on this earth even with administrations that try their level best to change it. I like states' rights and the ability to choose to live where it suits me best.

My father was born in Ireland and emigrated here. For Ireland you can get citizenship by descent...parent or grandparent. My father and all 4 of my grandparents were born in Ireland.

You have to be domiciled in Ireland to have to pay tax on income earned outside of Ireland.
If you don't live there they don't tax you.

So true. After all, Biden isn't all there so it's someone else pulling the puppet strings.

socialism - a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

The most recent examples we've had of socialism were the Bush bailouts where the government took ownership stakes in banks and auto makers. And Trump toying with the same thing for an airline bailout.

I'm willing to go expat and check out the experience in another country and would consider renouncing if I wanted to make that permanent if needed and dual wasn't an option. Especially in retirement where savings could go much further elsewhere. So, it depends. If I had a good opportunity and career prospects in say New Zealand that would be tempting.

Too libertarian to be married to a country.

I might. But as luck would have it, I landed in California and I rather like it here.
Well...then it's long past time for you to become an American citizen. Yet you refuse to do so. Why is that?

My cousin renounced US citizenship. She's not rich. She did it because the US enacted some laws that were detrimental to her being able to do even simple banking in Portugal.

Understand US laws on citizens living in other countries before you go assuming this is all about "rich people"
