To be fair, the mRNA vaccines that have come about from all of this, may very well lead to cures for cancer, the common cold, and a host of other ills.

I think it goes further than that. Regardless if this was a leak or not, gain of function is dead. No one is gonna entertain another leak, even if this was not one.

GOF could still be done. It would just require something like doing it on a ship at sea. It's not ideal, for sure, but neither is $20 trillion and up to 10 million lives.
Exposing this as a lab leak would hurt China's standing around the world. They did a lot of vaccine diplomacy as well as PPE diplomacy. All that goes down the toilet if the countries know China bore responsibility for the pandemic.
That gives motivation for Americans to fabricate a lab leak theory as part of our information warfare against China. I would rather Americans make up lies and succeed in defeating our enemy, than to be ignorant ourselves and actually believe something that's not true.
Today's international hybrid warfare includes smear campaigns, cyber attacks, espionage, economic warfare. All of these tactics involve deception. I personally don't believe the virus was a lab leak, but I have no problem lying and pretending it was a lab leak if it is to our advantage.
Apart from the fact that we have similar situations with American labs - what exactly is the point? Whether the virus escaped from the Wuhan lab, or whether it originated from a pangolin in a wet market, while it would be nice to know, what difference would it make politically? Even if it's from the lab, it was still an accident, and even if it weren't, it's not as if we're going to ban all Chinese products to retaliate.
It's nice to know, so that mankind won't make the same mistakes in the future.
Giving China's track record on human rights violations, and their blatant disrespect for the United States, I think it is plausible that it was intentionally leaked as a bioweapon. I don't think we will ever know.
I think it was intentionally engineered as a bioweapon. One engineered to be less aggressive in attacking those of Asian descent. Given the ability to map the human genome and engineer viruses for specific traits, IMO it's not as far-fetched as it sounds. Otherwise how do we explain the low infection rates of most Asian countries, in spite of the fact that they didn't "lock down" or destroy their own economies.

3.7 million people dead from this bioweapon-and you ask "is there a point investigation"? How insensitive can you get? Let alone how willing are you to let China get away with engineering this bioweapon and deploying it with ZERO accountability? I supposed you'd have just forgiven Hitler or Mao and said "please don't do that again".
