Of course we need to know - we'll never find out the truth though. Maybe our grandkids will.
And if it did leak from the lab (because, of course it did) we need to know how so we can stop it from happening again.
Which, we won't do, but the politicians will make a lot of noise about doing something ... and then in another couple of years we'll have an even bigger, deadlier leak.

As far as I am concerned the activity of engineering viruses need to stop, period. Supposedly the Wuhan lab was researching the original SARS virus and re-engineering it. Why re-engineer a virus that fizzled out? I can't think of an altruistic reason for doing that which leaves only nefarious reasons.

It's more nefarious than that. They were engineering bat coronaviruses to be more infectious in humans, but also Baric had a side project where he and his cohort in the Wuhan lab were working on a technique to engineer viruses that would be difficult to detect by other scientists.
Apart from the fact that we have similar situations with American labs - what exactly is the point? Whether the virus escaped from the Wuhan lab, or whether it originated from a pangolin in a wet market, while it would be nice to know, what difference would it make politically? Even if it's from the lab, it was still an accident, and even if it weren't, it's not as if we're going to ban all Chinese products to retaliate.

It seems increasingly likely that the Wet Market BS was a load of crap and the Lab Leak theory is reality. Strange that this only now being widely acknowledged. I'd already seen the evidence of all of it back in Jan-April 2020. Several Wuhan lab workers got sick. Some either died or disappeared. Horseshoe bats were not for sale at the wet markets in question. China buried the evidence and acted guilty as all hell.
Why does it matter? Well either:
China did the whole thing on purpose and has now intentionally killed 600K+ Americans and almost 4 million people worldwide.
The Chinese are insanely incompetent and should never again be trusted with anything like this again.
Even if it did come from the Wet Market, the conclusion is the same: China can't be trusted. China is incompetent. China is now and will continue to be a massive threat to humanity.

As for me, I guess we need to wait and see. It's all conjecture and guesses at this point. Whether it was engineered, whether it was released accidentally or on purpose, and so on. I doubt we'll know anytime soon, as China is obviously not going to be forthcoming in any way.
