Hmm, note he's still holding the Mexican flag in this picture even though he wasn't born in Mexico? Note that his mother had to reply in Spanish with a translator and yet she had to have lived here for 18 years in order for her son to have been born here? She still doesn't speak English? Immigrant advocacy organization? What would they be doing there when he was born here and not an immigrant?

Note how his mother is seeking an apology? For what? It's her son that should apologize for violating the dress code. Is he special and above the rules? Note how his mother says this is an attack on the entire Latino community? How so? Her son was born here. Should all graduates who were born here but have foreign born parents start parading around in the flags of their parent's country? How is this racism? Mexican isn't a race anyway it's a nationality.

This whole incident reeks more and more of parents being here illegally and their anchor baby displaying their arrogance and defiance towards the country that provided their son with an education.
Then you kick him out from walking but promptly give him his diploma. He’s already earned it by the time of the ceremony. School admin can suck a fat one. I remember they threatened to not let me graduate because I didn’t want to take the SAT at their official time (for more funding for them). I had already taken it and been accepted to college by this point.

And who cares what language his mother speaks. The US doesn’t have an official language.

Look at all the Republicans supporting petty government bureaucrats when it suits them.

Give the kid his diploma and escort him off the premeses. Problem solved.

Dress code violated, matters not what was used to violate it.

precedent applies to previous years.

consistency is required to gain trust and support for justice, no matter if in parenting, schools or federal government.

Meh, the easily led were suckered into believing he was wronged, even though he had violated the rules. He could have picked up his diploma last week but he refused to do so, seems he was milking the situation.

Other than sentimental value (although I'm pretty sure I lost my high school diploma years ago), has anyone ever had to actually produce the document for anything?

I get he "worked hard" to get that piece of paper. But he also broke the rules at the ceremony. As is typical in today's world, no one wants to address issues head on. They let things happen and linger and then there are even more issues. Someone at the ceremony could have just tapped him on the shoulder as he approached and told him to remove the flag.

The school allowed decorations on the cap - he could have put a flag on his cap and there would have been no problem. He knew what he was doing.

All a bunch of kerfluffle to show how racist we all are.

It's more about obeying a well-established rule, one that every other graduate had no problem with. The liberals, however, only obey rules when it suits them.

Give this disrespectful kid his diploma and escort him off the premises. Good riddance.

I might be slammed for this, but it is because of things like this that I am so glad that I moved to a place where the majority of people would not even think of doing anything like this. (And, btw, 50% of the people in my county voted for Biden, and 48.5% for Trump.) When I lived in SoCal and the Denver area, it was almost expected that something like this would happen at least once a month --- and probably 50 times a month in SoCal.

He got his diploma. He still wants to make a big deal out of it, wants to continue the fight (?), Mama wants an apology. An apology? For what?

"The US doesn’t have an official language". lol Like no one has ever made this asinine remark before and like it won't be made again to try and prove, well whatever it is the spokesperson is trying to prove. I guess in this case it's who cares that the Mama speaks Spanish, a variety of Native American, Russian, Arabic or what have you. But sure, let's just everyone in the US speak in every imaginable language you can dream up and learn and if you can't learn an alternative language, well crap, just use pig Latin. We definitely need more mayhem in this country. But it's cool man cause it ain't official.

My gawd, you just have to shake your head in total bafflement at how bizarre our world has become. Making me look forward to death to just escape this overpowering stupidity that's encompassing us now.

The point was that his mother had to have been in this country for 18 years since her son was born here and yet she still didn't know how to speak English? I guess that flew right over your head! It also helped prove to me that she is an illegal alien and her son is an anchor baby.

So laws that are in place for everyone can just go suck themselves? Rules are rules how arrogant to make such a statement!

And what was an immigrant advocacy group doing there? Were they assuming he is an immigrant? He was born here.

The problem with overlooking a flagrant violation of dress code (he didn't put the flag on until he was in line to receive his diploma) is it will be worse next year if you don't put a lid on it and make a public statement.

Next year, some guy will come in a superman outfit, then the next, in a speedo, then the next dressed in costume as the principal. And on and on.
