No one should work more than 40 hours/week at any job in the US to pay for food, clothing, housing, education, health care, child care and transportation. Anything less than that is a substandard wage.
Business models don't allow employers to base wages on your personal living expenses.
That's YOUR job.
If your job doesn't pay enough, then find one that does or reduce your living expenses.
Better yet, get the skills you need to make a decent wage BEFORE you rack up high living expenses with kids etc.
That's YOUR responsibility...... NOT YOUR EMPLOYER'S.

Well they do for HS kids, college kids and seniors looking for some pocket money.
That's who used to do those entry level, no skills needed cashier/FF jobs.
Now you have single moms with no skills or education thinking they can raise a family on burger flipper money.
Rising in nominal dollars, but falling in real dollars, as a dollar buys less and less every year. If you made $50k in 1960, you were doing great, now average at best
You were talking about nominal dollars you said salaries going down and prices going up. If you were talking about inflation adjusted dollars then saying “prices are going up†is redundant.

They get to decide what a viable business model is, not you.
I don't have any problem finding employees.
Why? Because I hire only by word of mouth and screen applicants carefully for those who want to work and learn a trade that will serve as a lifelong career if they're willing to put in the time and effort to learn it.
They get paid well when they demonstrate that they are reliable, hard working and are advancing their knowledge and skills.
But if all they talk about during the interview is what the starting pay is, and how they can't work overtime or weekends......
They get to decide what a viable business model is, not you.
Some folks actually care about sustainability and quality of life for members of their community. I know that's not en vogue in republican circles, but the idea is catching on with more and more of America's privileged class. I may be wrong, but I believe social responsibility will continue to gain influence as inequality and exploitative business practices wreak havoc on our communities and our environment.
