I was very poor, and very young......so my first job was at age l3. Then I moved out at age 17, out of my country, and lied about my age in order to obtain a better job, and went to school at night, and obtain five degrees. One of the things my mother always reminded me of was, "You should always own your own roof." I saved $10,000 and bought my first- house. Kept it for three years, sold it, bought a larger one, held it for three years sold it, and today, my PAID home is valued at 1. 5 million dollars, in one of the best areas of the City of NY.

Folks, all it takes is perseverance, hard work, common sense, judgement, and making the right decisions.....and all of you can do it......good-luck.

I was 35. I paid cash for it, but it was only like ~30k. It was a mobile home. The following year I sold it and bought a farm house for 185k (I took out a mortgage on that one). Then two years after that I sold that one and bought the home I'm living in now for 170k (also mortgage). I'd like to be done with moving for a time!

Those are two different questions as someone pointed out. I left my parents house for good when I was 20. Moved to college and never returned (to live there that is).

I was 21, but my then-husband was a veteran and so we didn't have to come up with a down payment, and so I don't think that counts. (I married when I was barely 18, btw.)

Being out on my own and buying a house weren't related much at all. After completing my degree, got my first professional job halfway across the country and moved out. Jobs for the next 10 years were limited term field research assignments scattered all over the US. No point in staying in any of those locations long enough to buy a house. Probably mid 40s by the time I wanted to put down enough roots to buy the first.

I had just turned 26 when I bought my first house, and I had been pretty much "on my own" for several years... that is if you consider being in the US Army and putting myself through engineering in college as "on my own".
