Maybe it's best to view it as a very enjoyable project/hobby? You allocate money to it - women buy sexy heels to impress the guy, get their pedicures, buy clothes, etc. to impress the guy (because men are focused on looks), and men allocate a few bucks to buy her a shake - if that's all the guy can afford - or a meal, or whatever lol.
Then you date lots of people, because the statistical probability that the first one is going to be "the one" is low.

I seen a buddy of mine ended a relationship with a scam artist before, so I have to side with 14Bricks on this one. After what I've seen, men really do need to be careful. I know not all women are that way, though.
This thread is unbelievable! It sounds like there are a lot of dudes here who have no clue how dating and relating to women works. Showing her you care usually comes naturally. If you have to think about it, you're probably with the wrong woman. I'm not talking about paying, I'm talking about showing her you care, in some form. If she doesn't know you care, you may have issues. Most dudes can't help showing they care, it's pretty much what being a dude is about. Unless they're just not that into her, or they're repressed, or something.
Guess what? There's a diversity of opinion among the women here. Shocker! We don't all think alike. Surely you can grasp that concept. Those of us who say it's not about money aren't being contradictory. It's just that other women disagree; for them, it's about a guy demonstrating his caring by buying them something (gift/s, meal/s). In those cases, money is a symbol for love.
For the record, I thought the ice cream date idea was cool.
