Smith Rock
Endless beaches
Endless rivers and lakes

With 8 billion folks on a rapidly shrinking rock, all about finding a place that checks enough boxes and live your best life possible.
It’s a great area but expensive and isolated, like southern UT, CO, best areas of
MT and Wyoming.

Not to mention the beaches in Oregon are cold, and the water is even colder. Not really comparable to Socal.

Not to mention poor accessibility and a lot of inhospitable conditions. I have family in Crescent City (on the OR border) and Salem, and most the beaches are no joke. If you aren’t a strong swimmer or using the buddy system you’re a goner if you venture too far out. I’ve surfed up there and get the heebie-jebbies so bad I don’t even bother anymore. Dark, cold, and choppy, water (with thick grinding waves) filled with great whites can do that. There are sandy beaches, but a lot are cliffs you need to walk down (if you even can). If something goes wrong the lifeguard isn’t rolling up in their truck. Pretty to look at though from your warm dry house.

Good enough for me. I don't need to be out there in the water and get mistaken for a great white, or worse, Moby Dick himself.

I've considered the Oregon and far northern California coast as a Plan B - especially since San Diego is taking all sorts of bad decisions.

To add on to your negativity, the OR and WA coasts are very susceptible to tsunamis, of which a big one is due up since last biggie was around year 1700 or so

Isolated? Seriously? Both cities with hospitals and colleges, one hour to either Portland downtown or PDX International airport.
Expensive? 500K buys a nice home.
Cold beaches? Yep, in winter. Summer? 70 degrees most days, water gets warm enough we surf it in light wetsuits. Beaches? Endless, many you can park right in front of and stroll onto the sand.
Born in Long Beach, have surfed from the tip of Baja to the Canada border..always best to actually visit a place before deciding you now anything about it.

Sorry I thought you meant Bend OR. Portland area is good but no usable beaches and wet. Would love Bend if I could afford it, have been there many times.

Fric, great restaurant there unassumingly called Local Ocean Seafood. One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest locale. Nice drive through but I would not sleep soundly knowing a tsunami may be on the way though all locations, even planet Mars, have certain risks. Oh, neverderangedtrump.

Newport is a fine town, geared more towards residents then visitors.
Has a great harbor area, a newer small hospital, all the usual shopping amenities
Has a great beach extending for miles.
Lots of housing choices. They have a couple of really nice 55+ modular home parks with big lots, garage and landscaping, running from 350K and up. Houses start around 450K .
About an hour drive east is the city of Corvallis, w/state college, hospital, health clinics, airport, etc.
