Folks : you can just ignore 'topper' - he is crazy unrealistic about SJ. As another poster said, just look at his post history - he is OBSESSED with comparing SJ.

Maybe San Jose is that good, and you guys are in the shell of inferiority complex and dated experience of San Jose's past.

Sorry, I don't understand the question??? Do I think downtown Oakland is better than downtown San Jose? Depends on what we are basing this question. Better in what way? I prefer Oakland but have no hate toward San Ho. Both have great aspects.

Multiple Bart stations with 15 minute Bart rides to the finical district have dictated where the development has taken place
San Jose is newer builds ,not so heavily dependent on renovation and can move in a new direction
SJ knocked down some of the best early 20th Century buildings to make space for parking lots. It was a decrepit place when I was a kid (1970s). It was a typical dying city, rotting from the core outward. They arrested the rot but lost a lot prior to that.

They sure fixed it up well from that dreadful downtown of the 70's. There was nothing but parking lots and Hispanic shops back then with no vitality once so ever. Oakland was way better back then compared to San Jose's.

It seems the late 60s-70s wasnt a great time for urban districts in general.

Good downtowns in the 60's and 70's: Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Minneapolis, SF, Seattle, San Antonio, Boston and Denver. Alot of those downtowns were booming due to oil and financial boom.
