Frankly, I could care less. I don't see myself driving to either, unless there is an 'event' that is exclusively in either place (like Cirque du Soleil which is currently in SJ, or a museum event in either, or a sports game or concert, etc).

There's just so much to do in the SF Bay area, why would I hassle with the parking and the Aholes in either place, instead of just going elsewhere?

Downtown SJ is really alive many nights of the week due to Sharks/concerts and busy convention. Sometime they pack downtown when the weather is warm. Very impressive downtown recently!!!

Oakland's downtown kicks San Jose's butt because of Blue Shield, UC President and Uber are building, renovating into new Oakland offices while San Jose stalls. 5 new high rises or even more will get underway there while none get underway in San Jose's downtown. What's wrong with this picture?!!

Actually, San Jose is an overgrown, crowded city, not a suburb. It's hard core city in the middle with suburb in the outer part.

Very disappointed with Japan Town because of the nasty gap between Japan Town and housing with a large vacant parcel of land giving a real dead feel to it.

Sorry, but not impressed for a city of 1 million.

Over 1 million, world class industry, nice international airport, Bart/Light rail and stadiums do justice and nice finishing touch for this city.

Oakland is still a dump in my opinion. There are some nice pockets, but it still has a long way to go to becoming a desirable city. If it weren't for San Francisco being across the bridge, there would be very little appeal.

The UC president's office has been in Oakland forever-thats not recent.

Oakland has gotten a lot better. But it's still a city of 450,000 people who can't afford SF.

Nope. Lots of people have chosen to live in Oakland for a myriad of reasons for a long time. Only recently has the tech worker priced of SF crowd showed up and try and make some parts into a mini me.

Too dependent upon a single industry, dinky airport (nice new terminal, but no way does this compete with SFO - single runway (c'mon)), BART is still years away - light rail is a tell tale sign of a 2nd tier city (no significant heavy rail investment), stadiums - 25 year old stadium for the Sharks and a 20k stadium for the earthquakes does not constitute world class city.

SJ is ok, but people continue to overplay its greatness here and I just don't get it. If it were so great, why would tens of thousands of people commute from SF daily on tech shuttles/cars (vs just living in SJ itself)?

It has gotten better but I'm sure most people live there because it's cheaper alternative to SF, besides the anarchists, the city itself wouldn't be very desirable if it weren't for SF across the bridge.

Bart is running this fall in San Jose Barryessa district. What about Levi's stadium in San Jose's back door? Don't forget it's the Capital of Silicon Valley!
