How Southern is this? I’m sure the old Czech-speaking folks are long gone now.

Many thousands of Texas of Czech ancestry still live and proudly express their heritage in towns like West and (if I remember correctly) in the area southwest of West.

Coming from East Texas I was totally caught off guard when I lived in Waco and had to go to West, Texas to take care of a traffic ticket. I had no idea there were Czech descendants in the state at that time. That's not something we discussed growing up or even back in school when we had to take a Texas history class. I was like "What state am I in? Is this Texas?". I was even more blown away that their ancestors had been here since Texas was a republic. Shows you how big the state is or how disconnected East Texas was to the rest of the state to not even know that. Or maybe just me. *shrugs*

Two famous “Czechans” are actress Sissy Spacek and her late cousin, the actor Rip Torn. Sissy’s father and Rip’s mother were brother and sister from Granger, a small town with a Czech heritage.

Actually quite a lot of them live down the Brazos Valley (near B-CS) and also the area between San Antonio and Houston - Flatonia is a Czech heritage town.

Didn’t the accordion used in Tejano music come from Central European immigrants?
