Emily told Aunt Carole that her mother had been ill most of Emily's childhood and then she died.

Emily told Daniel this "version" of how her parents died.
Her "backstory," as far as the Graysons are concerned, is that her father is a rich ex-patriot (lived in Europe) who died in a car crash with his wife when Emily was young. But we (the audience) know David Clarke died in no such way.
This "backstory" would explain away to the Graysons, why Emily was around Daniel's age and could afford to live in the Hamptons all by herself with no support from others and not having a job (she sits on the boards of various charities), per se. Emily played that entire family.

Not really - it's just that Nolan is so protective of her and loyal to her, moreso - it seems - than just doing a favor for a previous business partner.
And they're both devious.

For what it's worth, the actors playing the antagonists - Emily VanCamp and Henry Czerny - are Canadian. Maybe they should settle their differences over some poutine and Molsons, eh?

Gosh, I never thought of that. I've been thinking she somehow survived the crash, but that sounds like what might happen. She's awesome so I hope she returns. Conrad will look quite surprised to see her...
I also hope Charlotte is okay.
Now that White Haired Man knows Amanda's true identity I gather it will be revealed at some point in season 2.
I also hope that season 2 follows the same format as season 1 - with some big event being shown that we find the truth about halfway through.
