Although the possibility is far fetched, I would entertain the thought of something envisioned by Dr. Ramón Emeterio Betances. Many years ago, I read a book in which Dr. Betances promoted the idea of establishing one common nation out of Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Supposedly, he promoted this idea in the late 1800's, just before the US annexed PR.
Why?I see no reason they can't stay in their present status if they choose to pretty much forever.
Until there is a vote in which a majority of the population both participates in and votes for statehood or independence there is no reason for the US federal gov't to take any action either way.
I think the last time the island voted on the issue only around a third of the people bothered to vote or boycotted the vote.Until the people of Puerto Rico reach a consensus on the issue the rest of us should keep out of it.
For the record i'm OK with any of the three options.
it should be a state IMO.
if there was an overwhelming majority that wanted independence I would say let PR become a country.
