Looks like a winter radar loop this morning with snow showers and squalls around. Lake effect snows too. Wind chills in the 20s down to Philadelphia.. NW flow. Temps in the teens at 5000'. April 22, 2020

What kind of airmass is over us?

Look at that Trough. This couldn't happen in the winter?

It's near 0°F at 5000' in Northern NY & over Burlington.
In the teens over NYC & Southern New England..
Below freezing down to VA/NC border. Impressive.

I'll check for records after the offical 12z balloons launch. April 22, 2020

Balloon launch this morning over Long Island, NY reveals a record cold airmass aloft for todays date. Record was -3.9°C, it was -10.3°C this morning.

In fact never been this cold this late.
Normal is +4C

Source:

Another perspective is that this airmass is not even normal for anytime in the winter. lol. Crazy.

How about the monthly record low? Breaking daily records should not be a huge deal.

As far as Aprils... 4 of the last 6 were below normal here. 2017 & 2019 above normal but may have rained alot. I forget. We'll see where 2020 ends up.

Is this possibly due to the jet stream weakening from climate change?
